Hey fellas, I have a couple questions and this seemed like the best place to get the answers I need.

I spoke with a CAP pilot a few months ago that retired and used to fly the A-10. He said that if I wanted to fly the Hog I should go Air National Guard, I took this to mean that there are no AD A-10 units left in the AF. Someone told me the other day that, in fact, there ARE AD A-10 units in the AF, which leaves me sorta confused. I know the Hog is sheduled to be around for a good long time, but can you guys sort this out for me? Is it just NG, or AD, both, etc etc? I would like to fly the A-10 and am confused about which path I should follow to give myself the best chance of doing so, and I want to make it my career so going active would be my preference.

Also, are people allowed to pick their planes after UPT? I'm just wondering how hard it would be to go active and select the A-10. Not so much "what are my chances," just the general way it's done.

I'm kinda in love with the close air support role, so I'm also looking at the Army "High school to flight school" and the Marines. Really, I don't care if it's fixed or rotary. I'm still trying to decide which branch I want to pick because I figure the odds are high if I go Air then the odds of getting the A-10 are low which means if I'm LUCKY enough to get a pilot slot I'll probably end up in a C-130 or something. If the odds of getting A-10 are very, very low I figure it would be in my best interest to go Army or Marines to pursue the close air support positions. Your thoughts?

As Coach famously once commented 'Doing your homework is a novel concept'.......anyone who really, thats really wanted to fly a Hog would know the active duty still have them.
Plenty of info on these forums, someone usually asks this question once every couple of weeks.

When I first started looking the posts only went back 2 pages to November. After I posted this topic I went and tried search which goes back much farther and have been reading that since, thanks. I KNEW this sort of question would have been asked, so when I couldn't find one I was kinda confused. I assumed they had either just started a new forum or had somehow lost their old posts sometime in November. For what it's worth, I'm starting my homework now. I don't see how it's possible to have your homework done before you begin... I guess you guys get that alot, though.

This is the best place for info, my best connection is 12000bps so the video and 300kb picture laden recruiting websites can be a real time eater. I've found alot of info here, though, and the other military forums on the net.

By the way, if some dummy like me comes around later again and does a search, here's a picture showing where the A-10's are stationed and which branch of the AF they're being used by:

That's where the info came from and when it was last updated. No source was credited for the information, but FAS only has access to unclassified stuff as far as I know. I have used them as reference for years, pretty good site and non-profit to boot.

Really old. I remember that poster hanging on the wall when I was in tech school.

They say that the only two things certain in life are death and taxes. I prefer them in that order.
