this is probably a dumb question, but what was the reasoning for the change away from the Green Camo versions to the Grey?

Is grey just harder to see in the sky compared to the 2 tone blue some Eagles use?

Tail # 955. My records say I flew it on 7/24/1984...IP hop, logged .9. Not a normal number for the 78th so I must have been bummin' a flight somewhere else!

They just look better green.

No, that's a Dutch 104 out of the RNAFB base at Leeuwarden on the north Dutch coast. We trained with them often and mixed it up with them even more often!

That shot was taken on my 'fini flight' when we asked Leeuwarden to send up a Zipper for the event. It was a neat moment because I was going back to the US to fly 104s at Luke.

We did see the GAF 104s quite a bit but more often worked with the GAF F-4Fs out of Wittmundhaven.

Correct. In 1983, we redid our NATO employment concept with the NATO ground forces. Realizing that the traditional wall-to-wall load out was probably going to cost too much performance loss (meaning a one way mission), we got the Army to understand that the jet was better used in other ways. The result was the removal of four pylons and the parent mounting of Maverick and Rockeye on the pylons...no more LAU-88s or TERs and no more MK-82 in the standard loadouts. The primary SCL was 2 Maverick and gun, secondary was gun only, and tertiary was 2 Rockeye and gun.

The objective was to eliminate any weapons delivery that would result in the jet having to overfly the target...hence the emphasis on gun and Maverick.

By 1986, we were doing business in a completely different way than we had planned in 1982. The Hog had become a highly flexible, 'on demand', asset to the ground commander instead of just a throw-away force to be used on the FLOT in a static defense. That was left to the Army while the Hogs and other CAS assets were kept aside to deal with the unexpected.

You heard right. Having hit 60 in June 2004, I went off to the old folks home...for about three months. Then FlightSafety International called with an offer I couldn't refuse. They hired me and six other TWA former instructors to start a new training program on the Embraer 170/190 aircraft.

We're now up to 20 instructors...we have been using the sims in Montreal and Charlotte but now are finishing the installation of our first sim in St Louis, with another by the end of the year. It's been great! I didn't feel ready to hang it up, and this keeps me in the game. The 170 doesn't have a gun yet, but I'm working on it!!

Until then, I teach the Captains that when the tower clears them to land, they say "One's in"!!

Great shots there, IIRC 955 was a 'Vulture' at Bentwaters, then they headed off to Alconbury in '88.
Recall seeing 955 at a couple of shows with the then demo pilot Capt.Jessurun in 1986.

A couple of weeks ago, Sean and I spent a nice St. Patty's day afternoon having a few brewskies in St. Louis. He's about to upgrade to Captain on the Airbus at FedEx. We had a great time talking about old times in the 511th.

No disrespect to the current superb ACC Hog demo pilot's, but for me, the USAFE A-10 demonstrations of the 80's were the best, I can well remember Jessurun's demo at my local Biggin Hill air show in 1987, an excellent aggressive display highlighting the Warthog's manoeovreability and tactics, he won Best Solo display that weekend IIRC.
The 1980's......six squadrons of Hog's in the UK.......fantastic.
