Hello,

I'm trying to win a bet - is the 57 kg shaped-charge warhead of AGM-65A/B/D Maverick capable of penetrating frontal turret armor of an Abrams tank?

There's a photo of "Cojone Eh" from Iraq with a Maverick hit in this location, but I have doubts that the hole is an actual penetration, rather than just a crater. The Maverick reportedly uses an aluminum shaped charge liner made in the 1960s, and its penetration is quoted as only around 650 mm - pretty low compared to the more modern, >1000 mm penetration Hellfire with only 8 kg, 178 mm diameter warhead.

Would it be correct to say the anti-tank versions of Maverick are now becoming obsolete against modern armor?

Thanks for opinions in advance,

-SK

Roger that, thanks. :)

In case anyone's interested, this was the data that led me astray:

"AGM-65D
The AGM-65D (Maverick) is a 300mm air-to-ground missile used by the USAF. It is mounted on A-10A and other similar attack aircraft. It has a range of 16000m and an FLIR guidance system. It can penetrate 650mm of flat steel, 527mm of sloped steel armour and 257mm of composite armour."
