I don't know the story behind it, but I've seen it floating around for years. I have to laugh every time I see it because my first crew daddy got pissed at me once, when I was just a jeep, and hung me by my reflector belt from that same pylon. I was pissed at the time, but I can laugh about it now.

Why that question? Is he still hanging there or did they dropped him above the Taliban as secret and dangerous weapon?

I'm not positive, but I think this is the fabled E-1 variant. Was modified due to aerodynamic buffeting that resulted in a general lack of accuracy. Small ammo load was also mention as one of the drawbacks to this variant of the design. I also heard that a strange wailing noise could be heard by the pilot over the sound of the engines. At times it was said to even have distracted the pilots, though this was never verified to my knowledge. I have never seen the E-2 variant myself and couldn't find anything out from Google, FAS.org, or the GlobalSecurity sites.

I'm pretty sure it's either Whiteman or New Orleans (they did a joint deployment) in Bagram. May or June 2002.

Assault is a type of behavior, not a type of rifle.

Not sure Jack, but I think this shot is alot older than that time frame. Think this ones been floating around longer than that!

2002 sounds about right to me. I know there was a shot of an F-16 which was almost the same which came out earlier.

Well, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award on the fuselage should help narrow it down. It's definitell not an Active Duty jet. I'm almost positive its from that timeframe in Bagram, but, I could be wrong. I will dig through my stuff and check. I know I have a bigger version of that picture, and another one facing the guy from the front. I am pretty confident that they have a date/timestamp on them in the corner.

Found it. My copy of that pic came off of the server at Talil during OIF. There's no timestamp in the corner like I thought there was, but you know that little yellow window that pops up when you hold the mouse over something? It says picture taken on 6/3/03. (But it also says taken at 3:50am, so either someone didn't change the time on their camera or the date is possibly wrong.) It was the 104FS from Maryland.

I bet now your thinking, oh, the server at Talil, June 2003, this must be OIF. Nope. It's Bagram. Without a doubt. Check it out:

You can see more of the background in this one, and it gives all kinds of details. The date on the camera is almost definitely correct, and I say so for several reasons. You see that white "thing" in the top of the picture? That's a ballon they had floating above the base. It was not there in the summer of 2002, and was gone by late 2004 (the towers that replaced the ballons were built while Eielson was there last time from Mar-Oct 2004). The wooden buildings are being still being built. And the most obvious reason it's Bagram is the mountains.

Now correct me if I'm worng, but I thought that the 104FS DID deploy to OIF (which was going on on 6/3/03). Am I wrong and they did not deploy there? Or did they do split-ops? Or a back to back deloyment? Or maybe they did a joint deloyment sharing jets like we did in the 75th/74th? Or what?

Assault is a type of behavior, not a type of rifle.

As I recall, the 175th FW (104FS) was in Bagram for their original AEF rotation that began in Jan 03. They replaced the 354th from DM. That original AEF was supposed to be comprised of Baltimore, Willow Grove and Connecticut. Connecticut was removed from that AEF rotation in order to prepare and deploy with TGT pods with the 104FW (Barnes) for OIF. That left Battlecreek and Boise at Al Jaber for the what was supposed to be AEF 7. The OIF build up at the Jab eventually included Pope. Baltimore was activated in place during February, because there was no one left to relieve them. Once everyone involved in OIF started to return home to the states in May/June 03, Spang 81st FS went in to relieve Baltimore at Bagram in June 03.

jackb:

I concur. That is definately the Bag. 30MM can verify also. Time frame sounds right too. We left December 2002 and were back in Oct/Nov 2003. If I remember right, the Creek relieved us at Jabber in 2002.

OK Ok I give I give!
So its not as old as I was thinking it was! LOL

Hitler?
It seems my old birds would have been in good hands with you while in the sandbox! I served in 75th, being assistant on several.....152, 153. 141, and finally crew on 141 to finsih my time there.

Only guys I ever saw from the 75th after I left it, was while working security at Sams Town in Las Vegas. Passing one of the bars one night and saw an obvious group from the base. A couple of the guys had A-10 t-shirts on with reference to 75th. In talking, one of the guys sitting there was crew daddy for 141 at that time! Small world sometimes!

Hitler - LOL, yeah those chairs rocked. I remember goign to wal-Mart when we got back and buyign one, and I got another one in Korea with a part you can put your feet up on. I still call them "Bagram chairs".

HogSnort - 79-0141?!?!?! That was my jet! Well, I was assigned to four jets while I was at Pope. Third wipe on 79-0159, third wipe on 79-0204, ACC on 79-0162, and as soon as we came back from our deployment to Al Jaber/Bagam I was the DCC of 141. There is an 80-0141 at DM. If yours was 79, the picture in my Avatar is of her during OIF.

HogSnort,

Thanks, I always tried to maintain the birds in the best possible condition. Guess it goes back to what my Father (also a retired CC) told me, Never send a pilot up in an aircraft that you yourself wouldn't be willing fly in. Although at the Bag there was a few occasions that the tires where extremely less than desirable due to a shortage of tires and runway conditons.

JackB, after looking at that Pic doesn't that look like CMSGT "Gunny"?

Jack......all ours were 80 models when I was there.
Well not "ALL" of what we had. We had a few 79's in "A" flt and the last couple we got were some of the last from the plant.
If memory serves me correctly.

I remember us having both 175's......"A" flt had 79 model and we had 80 model in "B".

I would be almost positive I have a complete list of tails we had while I was there ratholed in a box somewhere!

Agree with all the clues mentioned: the mountains of the "Bagram Bowl", the signals balloon, etc. When I got there in July '03 the 81st was well established.
