Anyone have any idea how many total combat sorties the A-10 has flown in it's career?

Someone mentioned to me the SU-25 has flown 60,000 combat sorties between chechnya and a-stan(the soviets admit to 23 A/C lost), i was wondering how the A-10s loss rate compares.(8 A-10s have been shot down, and 1 lost upon landing that i know of)

Thanx.

As in "SHOT DOWN" is that including HOG's that RTB?" Or ones that like 80-0248 that were shot Down over Enemy Territory?

Because lets take 79-9181,She was Shot-up pretty Bad but made it back to the FOL but did a Belly landing in the Desert.
Then their was the Beach Bird that the Nose gear collasped coming in with Battle Damage and Enough said

So I guess I'm being picky about the Break downs Snipe.
Or I didnt understand the figures

In that Figure you have to put in the "8" combat Storties in Grenada flown by the 76th TFS.THE FIRST COMBAT SORTIES.

I think only a few bombs were dropped and a few 100 rounds of 30MM, was about it.

Wheres SPUD or STEFF when you need them???

However you guys want to present your figures is fine as long as you explain what you're basing them on.

I appreciate the assistance in this matter fellas. :)

I thought there were NO Sorties Flown then Goose, if my memory serves me correctly?
Best I remember being told that the guys sat on a beach getting a tan for a week.
The footage of the Hogs they showed on National News was of the birds inbound crossing a sand dune. That was the only flying they did.
Maybe I am wrong here or we are talking different times maybe?

Just from Gulf War I...

quote:

In the decade and a half leading up to the Persian Gulf War, the Air Force A-10 community worked hard to hone its skills in the difficult business of providing close air support (CAS) for ground forces. During Operation Desert Shield, seven squadrons with 144 of the ungainly attack planes went to Saudi Arabia, where they formed the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing (Provisional) based at King Fahd International Airport.

For instance, the Warthog force was used only sparingly in the CAS role but proved more versatile and better able to survive over enemy territory than many expected. During the forty-day conflict, the A-10 force was credited with destroying 987 tanks, 926 artillery pieces, 1,355 combat vehicles, and a range of other targets-including ten fighters on the ground and two helicopters shot down in air-to-air engagements. The A-10 force, flying more than 8,000 combat sorties, suffered only five A-10s destroyed (a loss rate of .062 percent). Twenty of these aircraft returned with significant battle damage, and forty-five others returned with light damage that was repaired between sorties.

Hogsnort,
I think your thinking of the 76th's 85 TDY to Aruba ,where the TDY element went to Aurba, the ESTA TEAM got Stuck in PR because of a Tropic Storm and the Guys who went onto Aurba spent 9 days on the beach etc.... and only turned the Jets to go Home because the TDY was up.
According to Steff and SPUD they went to Grenada, turned a few times 4 jets and went back to PR.
I think they told me only 4 jets got there.Thats what I remember about it,and the history books on the Hog even talk breifly about it as the HOG's first Combat.

I wonder if I can find FREEBIRD, he would know, but thats always what I was told but I was there for the 85 Aruba TDY,
I WAS STUCK AT BACK AT BASE!
Col Lemon would know.

I remember it because we were getting ready to leave about 4 in the morning or so, after being there all night waiting on a broke ass bird that was down in phase hangar I think.
We got called to stay as we were heading out the door. Some went ahead and ran off, but I was a dummy and stayed!

We then got sent over to Red to generate their birds for the TDY as they initiated a bag drag on those guys.
I remember we had to get like 3 from Blue and 3 from Black as spares, due to Red not having enough to make the scheduling needs!

Think I got sent home finally like 2 or so in the afternoon, after we had been there like 22 hours!

I heard that story to from "Jackson" and the other "Tuna's" that came over to Red after the "Golden Flow" nabbed so many.

So I think were on the right track.

Interesting question Sniper, I don't know if anyone (outside ACC or the A-10 SPO) has added-up the numbers and published them publicly.

I'll see if I have any friends left at the A-10 SPO and what they might be able to tell me.

Visit my A-10 website at

Hogsnort,

That TDY on the beach I put Aruba was actually the
Island of Barbados off of South America. Col Jamerson had gone down there before hand and Passed-out Scholl suppilies and stuff Scoping the place out

I went to AIRWARRIOR (NTC) when they got back after all the Hurriavac's were over that year.
