Post subject:  A-10s in Italy

Hello,

would anyone of you Hog afecionados be able to tell me if there are any Hogs in Italy? Maybe in Aviano?

I\\'ve also heard about the expansion of the Dal Molin Base, also in Italy; will the units in Spangdalhem maybe be moving to the new base in Italy in the future?

Thank you all for any info.

Completely new for me this story about a new base in Italy and the moving to that from Spangdahlem. Never heard about it. Were did you read or saw this?

Aviano, I don't know if there are still Warthogs there, but I think in the past (with the war in Serbia, Croatia etc, I thought operation Deny Flight) is it possible to had there A-10's.

The base I\\'m talking about already exists and is near Vicenza. Last week the U.S. Government requested the go-ahead from the Italian counterpart for an enlargement of the base.

As for Aviano I\\'m sure Hogs flew from there during OAF but I don\\'t know if any are still there.

Vincenza was an Army Post being home of the 509th Airborne while I was stationed at Aviano in 81 & 82.
I assume it is still Army as I have heard nothing other of it.

thanks for your help, although my hopes of seeing a Hog live in my home country are now shattered :(

I went to the RIAT this summer, my main intention being of seeing my favourite bird live and up-close... and her static display was cancelled ! I\\'ll have to organize a trip to Spang or to the US someday.

Last year Spangdahlem had an Open House. I went to that. There were 2 Warthogs at static (and several others) and the only flying display were an A-10 and the F-16.
Always look on there site for news http://www.spangdahlem.af.mil/

Not sure how close you are to the Aviano area Lunanera, but I am sure the Hawgs still pass thru once in awhile.

Of course when I was there in 81-82, they used Aviano alot. With the units at the Twin Bases of Bentwaters/Woodbridge, we usually had some passing thru every couple of days.
They also used us as a TDY spot, spending upto a week or more with us at times.
I am sure now though with the buildup for suport in the gulf region and the active wing now at Aviano, space has probably gotten a little tighter for transient acft.

My time there was wonderful.......no acft assigned to the base.......what a life for a acft mechanic! LOL

Vincenza is in the news today. But I don't think it is positive news for Lunanera. Maybe you know more about this?
