Post subject:  STA 10 and 11 question????

I've been under the [puke] so taking it easy I've been looking thru some books I just got in the mail.
LOCK-ON #7 for the \"Heavy Duty Model Builders\" which I did find a few mistakes but a picture and caption came up.

They talk about(STA 11) the \"2\" lights , 1 mounted right under the wing(?)at that point and one on the Pylon its self .They say used for night operations lighting up the Cockpit.

Maybe I've been off the the Hog too long but I dont seem to remember the lights their talking about do you folks?\"

Goose, you might remember them as nose illumination lights. Not cockpit lighting lights like they are saying

Jb,

I dont even remember them :?: :?: Because that was the ECM pod STA and I never remember there being 2 lights let alone 1.

I just really remember that night flying 1 of us had to stand next to the taxi way with a flashlight too see which jet it was and signal the crew chief.
I just really remember the nose gear lights.
I'm going to dig out some pictures to help remind me I guess.

That WARBIRDTECH Book Vol 20 is pretty good book,
It shows the BATTELLE or \"Salad Shooter\" and how it was modified and installed, but according to the book they said \"Over half the fleet had them installed before they took them off.

We only had 1 jet that was 82-2653 in the 76th with it installed.
They must be including the ANG and RES units because they were also the first ones to get the \"F-2\" MOD we had seen.

Maybe they meant to say the one mounted on the wing? as in the position or the NVIS light.

JB and Dice pointed out the only other light under the wings I can think off. However to say they light up the cockpit during night operations I think is pretty far fetched. They didn't even light up the nose of the aircraft enough to identify them during total black out conditions. Also with the NVIS mod, aren't they cut off when in NVIS mode?

The only lights I remember are the following:

Sta 1 & 10 - Nose Illum (For Nighttime AR)
Wingtip Postion, Anti-Collision, & NVIS
Tail cone Postion, Anti-Collision & NVIS
Backbone (Illum's the Engines)
Belly
Tails (Tail Flash Illums)

Also there are the Electro-Strip lights.

I don't remember any others.

I guess been off them too long, I dont ever remember those lights on the pylon .
We were just getting strip lights when we deployed and they left those birds at home, I think we might of gotten one in as a replacement but mine never had them while I was on it.
I had just gotten the AIM-9 MOD months before we went to the Gulf.

It's OK Goose......I'm with ya brother.......I dont recall those either, but I wasnt going to say anything until others mentioned same thing! LOL

And whats this mention of strip lights?

Are we talking the neon looking bar that was on the birds in the early 80's then possibly removed? Think they had like 4 lights in the strip.
I remember them from when was in Aviano and saw the Bentwaters/Woodbgridge birds coming thru, but dont remember them state side?

Maybe I'm like Goose........My memory isnt serving me well lately from that many years back! [shock]

HogSnort,

Yes, the strip lights are those neon green lights located on the fueslage (aft of the ladder door / lox pnl), outbd wing tips, aft fueslage (top) and on the otbd sides of the vertical stabs.

Can't say for sure, we started putting them on the aircraft (stateside) while I was at Shaw so it had to be between 92 - 94 time frame.

Goose, maybe this will jog your memory...........remember changing the aileron actuator.....after you pulled sta 1 or 11 off there was a cannon plug...that was for the nose illlum light.........remember?????

Author:  sgtgoose1 [ 19 Mar 2007, 15:01 ]
Post subject:

OH, I remember a cannon plug but thats it,but I remember pulling those DAMN AILERON ACTUATORS.
That was my first \"REAL JOB\" on a A-10.I hadnt even been to \"MAT\" yet or Crew Chief 101 .
I watched those DAMN SLIDE SHOWS and copied the answers from the Flight offices cheat sheets
They told me \"Hey you've been a Crew Chief already for over 4 years Sarge, just read the book.\" . They had already Went ahead and gave me my 5 level, but had to start the 7 level CDC's
So with 2 others who were 3 levels because we had a TDY out ,I learned the Hard way and followed the TO word for word.
So I remember the plug not the lights, but next time I go to Grissiom AFB I'll check out the A-10 there.

Goose, I did a little sleuthing in the TO's for you just to see if the litghts had been a TCTO that came after you had worked the jet. It appears that they are original equipment.

Bentwaters only got those lights about late 91 early 92ish?....before they transferred, unless they were headed straight to AMARC in which case they were'nt fitted.

Goose, I recall seeing a pic of a Flying Tiger in GW1 with the 'slime lights', maybe a replacement as you said.

I just plain forgot about those lights, I probably changed the bulbs a couple of times but it just wasnt one of those things that \"Sticks\" in your mind.
Must of not had too many \"Red Balls\" for them, plus my last 7 months on the HOG we didnt recover to many birds after dark into the revetments.
Thanks Guys.
