“MAZDA 11, The tanker is in the green, sitting in the hammerhead at McGuire waiting for your release. Have a safe trip and kick some ass”

On May 8, about 630 am, a flight of 12 A-10s took off from Willow Grove NAS JRB, PA heading over to Iraq. They left in two flights: MAZDA 11, a flight of 7, and MAZDA 21, a flight of 5. The ID ANG A-10s came in a few days earlier, and actually a few are still here. They also took some of the 111th FW PA ANG A-10s. Was curious to know about that.
Here's a few pics of them departing that morning. Kind of got a weird feeling knowing these guys were heading off to fight. Thought you guys might like to see. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Someone asked if there was any way to identify a Plus model A-10 and Dice figured it out. The pics of 629 and 196 are the best examples of the only external difference; take a look at the aft belly antenna.

Nice pics Waltz.

Well at least a couple of old Barnes jets are going to get back into the fray. (even if they were ours fifteen years ago). Lord knows we'll never deploy again with Fleagles.

how come they are only carrying one ferry tank, I thought they used two when going over seas?

TG, I think it depends on the Tanker Support. I can remember one trip we actually took all three bags over... then two... and then only one.

I think the change of the antenna is to accomodate the ARC-210 radio, nothing to do with the A-10A+ modification.

Actually Coach it was changed to accomodate the SADL radio which is part of the plus mod, though it is the same antenna that's used by the ARC-210.

So I guess that means the antenna is not an ID thing for A-10A+...what you see depends on which airplane you're looking at. The As in the AOR have the ARC-210 as well.

Like I said earlier, its not the defining feature of an A-10A+.

Yup, you're right Coach..my bad. We weren't doing the 210 when I first made that statement but now that the 210 is becoming more prolific there's no external difference.
