I know each squadron has a jet assigned to the squadron commander and it carries the call-sign of the unit like Tiger I, Shark II, and Sandy 01 but, there are also aircraft with the call-signs like Tiger II, Shark II, and Sandy 02. My question is, are these aircraft the commanders back-up jets or are they his wing-mans aircraft or, something else altogether? |

Tiger II was the Vice Wing Commander's Call sign, just like Vanguard II was the 76th's Vice Commander, but then they their Own Call signs too. We mostly used the \"Tiger II , Shark,Vanguard,Bozo call signs to Name the Jets or Who's Jets they were. So it was a \"Toss-up\" on the II's but the I's were always the \"Boss\". Goose |

I never heard of a II of the callsign of the unit, like Iceman II or Shark II, just the I. When the II person would fly, I think they were just the I of whatever callsign that fight was using, like Nail I or whatever. But I could be wrong, I don't pay much attention to who's in the seat. |

Thanks Goose. Jack here's a couple examples of what I'm talking about...

The Tiger is probably Tiger-one-one, not Tiger Two. While Tiger-Zero-One is the boss, Tiger-Zero-Two is just his wingman. Rarely do DO's or Deputy Commanders carry their own callsigns asociated to the unit. I've never seen it other than on the ground radios. Coach |

We mostly just used them to \"Describe the Vice Wing C/C Jet \" or the Vice WC/C When 0164 & 0166 were Tiger 1 (0164) and Tiger II (0166) few months while the Twins were Gone to Depot, and Gun Smoke was going on . We were the \"I guess 3rd Team\" 0164 got the Rainbow Tail and Wing Tail Code etc.. , mine was left alone but still Tiger II, Coach I think your right, it was more of a Ground Radio Call sign and AMU thing. But if we saw the Vice we would go on the radio \"Heads-up, Tiger 2 on Ramp\". Goose |
