Hi all, I have not seen the hog in person since I saw the demo team in Orlando in '93, and was wondering when the move was made from the euro green to the old/new color scheme? I am puting together a new model, and would like to represent it acurrately for today's colors and markings. Can anyone post a picture of the current scheme, so that I get it right. My decal choices in this set are #962 from Spanghelm (although there is no panther for the engine nacell), or #258 from Battle Creek. Are these current assignments? My only other option is a old decal set from an old monogram model which depicts #175 with the flying tigers. Which would you make? Also, have the four circles on the top of the fuselage and wings been changed from red to black on the new markings? sorry for the long post. "Do, or do not. There is no try." |

The first grey Hogs after the Euro1 scheme in USAFE appeared in mid 1992. The 81st TFW back then seemed to have their own interpretation of it cos it was different to the example coming out of the paintshops in the US. |

THE FIRST GRAY SCHEME WAS CREATED BY A CAPTAIN IN THE 91st FS IN 92 AND ADOPTED SAME YEAR FROM RAF WOODBRIDGE UK. |

Me thinks the reference to a certain Captain dreaming up the Grey paint scheme is incorrect. I'm shooting from the hip here because I don't want to take the time (ie. lazy) to go down and dig through my stuff, but I believe the grey paint scheme was developed through the folks at Wright-Patterson. It's low reflectance provides some kind of defense against certain types of missles. Cheers db Being responsible means sometimes pissing people off. Gen Colin Powell ret |

I WAS IN THE SQDN AT THE TIME (I FORGET HIS NAME) THIS CPT WAS DOING THE "SCHEMES" OF DIFFERENT GRAYS TO MAKE IT HARDER TO SEE AN A-10. HE EVEN HAD A EURO GREEN OVER SKY BLUE! POSSABLY THE TYPE OF PAINT (I.E IR REFLECTIVE PAINT) AT WRIGHT-PAT. I WAS JUST STATING HE DID THE FINAL SCHEME WITH THE FAKE CANOPY ON THE BOTTOM THAT WAS APPROVED BY WRIGHT-PAT. SORRY FOR ANY MISSUNDERSTANDING |

DB is correct, the paint scheme was developed to defend against particular seekers that we encountered in Desert Storm. It was not adopted for appearances. I can't say about the false canopy on the bottom, but I thought the original had that as well. I know the F/A-18s do. |

The original paint color was known as "Sea Foam Green" before being replaced with a camo paint scheme around 1981. The darker grey oval silhouette painted on the bottom of the aircraft directly opposite of the cockpit was intended to confuse ground observer as to which direction the A10 was maneuvering. At a distance, this grey silhouette does give the appearence of the cockpit. Since I have not worked on A10's since 1982, I can not comment on the grey color scheme that others have made references to. |

I think if we are going to use the gray scheme, we need to change it and move the darker greay to where the lighter grey is, and the areas that are currently the darker grey should be Strike Eagle grey. --Raven "For democracy, a man would give his only begotten son." |
