Dear All

I am currently producing a programme on the A-10 for the History Channel series 'Heavy Metal'. It's going to be a packed programme with masses of great footage, interviews and archive.

I need your help!

I am looking for people to interview about their experiences in the following conflicts:
KOSOVO
AFGHANISTAN
91 GULF WAR
OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM

I am eager to speak to anyone BUT - also interested in getting into contact with the following people - if anyone knows how to get hold of any of them please let me know....

1. Capt Bob Swain
2. Capt Todd 'Shanghai' Sheehy
3. Capt Paul Johnson
4. Capt Eric Salomonson
5. Lieut John Marks
6. Capt Kim 'Killer Chick' Campbell
7. Col David Sawyer

Also I am wanting to feel active Warthogs - where is the best place to film? i was wondering whether it was Davis-Monthan or Pope.

Any information would be very gratefully received....

Best wishes

This is a definitely the place to gather A-10 info. There are tons of people with knowledge and first hand experience in the conflicts you listed, unfortunately for me, I missed the "major" conflicts while I was on active duty (94-98).

Brought to you by your friendly neighborhood moderator...

Katie, glad to see the interest in the Hog and any face time the old girl can get is always a good thing!

As prkiii said there are a lot of people here who have participated in the conflicts you are interested in and I’m sure they can supply valuable information and experiences. I must also say a lot of us here are current Active duty, Guard, and Reserve members and must go through proper channels before we can give interviews or information to the media. If someone here would like to help you out they could give you their name and unit and you can then go their units Public Affairs office to obtain proper permission.

Out of all the pilots you have listed I know where two of them are today but again, I (or anyone else here) can give out that information with proper clearance.

I do want to see a film on the A-10 made and would be happy to help you find, get contact info (emails/phone numbers), and help with any Air Force “red tape” anywhere I can. I will email you tonight with my home phone and email addy so we can talk and make sure we get a Hog film made but, do it the right way.

You asked where would be the best place to film DM or Pope, in my opinion you can get outstanding footage and cooperation from either unit. Pope has one of the most colorful history being a direct descendent of the famous WWII Flying Tigers, and they have participated in most of the conflicts you are interested in.
DM is also a great choose because they are our largest A-10 wing (Pope is the largest combat unit) which contains one combat unit, and two training units, and also has an excellent history back to the Wild Weasels of Vietnam fame and before.

One thing I would like to point out, don’t restrict you film to Active duty units because the Guard and Reserve’s have played major roles in both Gulf War I and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In fact I was in close contact with, and have numerous friends in, units like Bradley ANG (MA) and Whiteman AFB (MO).

If you would like my help please feel free to contact me by email at…
Phatom2@aol.com

Thanks for the vote of confidence Sniper, you know I would like to get a good Hog film done!

Thanks Goose but she also needs to talk to people like you! You are retired, get some of those "war stories" out for everyone to enjoy!

Kate, Goose was the Crew Chief on 166 (aircraft) during Desert Storm and another member of this forum, Hawg166, is the current Crew Chief on that jet and just returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Katie this is definetly the place for Hawg info and history. I am humbled daily by the wealth of experience and knowledge in these forums. By the way I got a bunch of pics I am sending out from Iraqi Freedom. If ya would like some stills for your own observations let me know. We can never have enough people on the Hawgs side.

Dice I am going to send that file off to you by end of day. Feel free to pass them around to anyone you think may like them. I am ging to burn a copy of the disc and get it to Goose because there are 758 pics on it. He can pass it on to you.

Most definitely. Finally did see "Storrman" a couple of times on CNN and FOX after the rescue of Jessica Lynch. It was good to see him again.

Ms.,
As stated below. Do not discount the Guard and Reservists in OEF or OIF. I'm currently part of 442nd Fighter Wing, and we've been the only Reserve A-10 wing to be in this one. We are also notorious for being the "go to unit" for PopeAFB and Battle Creek, when they need operations set up for them before they arrive to a forward location, i.e. Tallil AB in the southern portion of Iraq. Talk to the PA reps. out at WhitemanAFB for info. I think you'll find out something that all of us "HAWGS" know and hold dear, despite our internal rivalry, we all are a very close nit family. From father and sons, to mothers and daughters, both home and out here. And we are all proud to say, "Don't shoot at em', it just makes them mad!" So Ms. Katie.....Go ugly early, and help us all remind the Top Brass why the A-10 exists...to do it right, and to do it right now! Good luck!

SrA. Joshua Honey

i toncur with the lady about the making of movie of the a10,they did one on the discovery channel about four or six years right after the sandbox war(gulf war). we as flyers and fixers of the HOG would be proud to give stories ofhte hog espically the helobusters and the bicycle story, helo popper is guard bird and 954 is at present pope with the 75. the bird was at shaw with the 55 before being trans to pope. DM has the training and better weather to film the stories, but the guard and active share deep concern for the hog. she has a rich history to share. we as flyers/fixers in the active force (pacaf usafe guard and reserve) would be honored, i believe to help with the filming for the program. one bird you need to look into is acft 79-666 at dm presently, the armarc is still reeling from taking that bird apart wing to another acft broken at deport presently, i hear they not really happy, still getting ghostly sounds from the area of acft resting place. they say it is still possessed from being retired from the beach (mytle beach). i flew it once, before they reitred it. the plane had a mind of its own, want to turn right would turn when it wanted right turn. i pray for the person who tears apart that bird.
