There was a programme on UK TV last night called 'Battle Stations Iraq'. It's part of a series covering hardware used in the last Gulf War (I know it's still not officially over, but who's counting). Last week it was about the BUFF and last night about the Cobra and the Apache. It's a pretty good watch and always has some good footage (the BUFFs carpet bombing was AWESOME ). They called the A-64 the defining weapon in the last Gulf conflict (don't all shout at once ) and gave this example… BTW, I'm not anything to do with any armed forces, so I know I'm going to get some of this wrong, but that's why I'm posting it. So I can get some other folk to help me get the facts straight. So lots of apologies up front if I get the wrong units or jargon wrong and offend somebody… Two A-64 units with some 101st Infantry support managed to blow away an entire Iraqi division of over 500 armoured vehicles including over 400 MBTs in 48 hours. Now that sounds mighty impressive… (But I'm guessing because it was a bunch of A-64's they where only going where they knew nobody would shoot back ) So, is it true? And if it is, what could a bunch of hogs with the same ground support and in the same circumstances do in the same time? "A .44 magnum beats 4 Aces everytime..." |

I'm not in the military also, but here are my comments: First of all: its the AH-64, not A-64. Without the "H", it's just another plane, not a helicopter. Second: From what I think, it would be likeable that they could blow away that many, but it all depends on how far the FARP was from the engagement area, being that each Apache can only carry 16 Hellfires. I'm assuming that the non-MBT's, could be taken out with the 30mm cannon, but the MBT's can only be taken out with Hellfires. If we figure that the Apaches made a total of 30 missions with 16 Hellfires each flight, with an average of two misses or missiles not fired every mission, (meaning 14 Hellfires were shot and hit/killed a target) it seems logical that they took out that many. Being that they had the 101st Infantry support, which probably consisted of ATM's, such as the AT-4, and MBT's and IFV's such as the M-1 Abrams and the M2/M3 Bradley, I find it likely that, yes, that's how the story went and they really did take out that many. As for how much the A-10 would be able to do? Say 4 A-10's flew with 6 Mk 82's, 2 AGM-65's and a full load of 30mm, I assume they would be able to take out at least 15-20 ground targets per mission, per airplane, (30-40 with a two-plane flight, 60-80 with a four-plane flight) with the ground support. If each mission lasted 2 hours, with an hour down time in betweenmissions, than they would be able to make 16 flights. 16 missions with a total of 60-80 targets would mean a total of 960-1280 ground targets in 24 hours. Around double the amount the AH-64's would be able to take out. But once again, this is all extremely hypothetical, and I'm not in the military, so this is all one big guess... "Retreat, hell! One Bde of Apache's is 36 birds, time 16 hellfire missiles each. A typical armored Bn is about 36 tanks, times 3 bns to a Bde, times 2 bdes to a division, plus a bde of IFVs, with all kinds of attatchments. So that gives you 576 missiles to kill 216 tanks. Of course a division will normally be spread out over a pretty large frontal area, and in depth with dedicated AAA and SAM units, which would soak up a lot of hellfires as well. Did they mention which Iraqi division it was? "Trample the wounded...hurdle the dead" |

A HOG DURING DESERT STORM FLEW BETWEEN 4-6 MISSIONS A DAY AND THEY WOULD HIT THE TARGET,GOT TO THE FOL,RE-FUEL REARM,HIT NEXT TARGET,BACK TO KING FHAD AB.,RE-FUEL RE-ARM SWITCH OUT PILOTS,HIT TARGET,GO TO FOL,RE-FUEL -RE-ARM,HIT TARGET,SOME WOULD GO BACK TO FOL TURN&BURN,HIT TARGET THEN COME HOME OR STAY AT THE FOL IT ALL DEPENDED ON THE FLYING TIME OR HOW DEEP THEY WE'RE GOING. BUT WE FLEW WITH 4 MAV'S AND 4CBU'S OR 4 MK-82'S THEY DID ALOT OF DAMAGE THOSE AH-64 WHEN THEY COULD FLY, BUT I WOULDNT GO AS FAR AS CALLING THEM "THE DEFINING WEAPON"IN THE LAST GULF WAR, MAYBE FOR THE ARMY. IF YOU GO BY THE MOST PICTURED ITS THE F-117,BUT AS FAR AS THE MOST FEARED WEAPON ITS THE "HOG" AND I PUT THE "B-52" THERE TOO' THOSE ROCKS KNEW IT WAS A BAD DAY WITH THE HOG AND BUFF WORKING OVER THE GRID. BUT YOU CANT FORGET THE HOG AND F-4G WW TEAMS EITHER CLEANING UP SAM SITES AND OTHER TARGETS PRESS TO TEST |

"WTF GOOSE"? HOW I'AM I SUPPOSED TO TAKE IT? HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A PICTURE OF AN OPERATIONAL HOG LOADED? THE A-10 ON SOME PROMO PICTURES SHOWED TONS OF BOMBS ON IT,BUT THAT WAS FOR SHOW,WE DONT USE MER'S,HARDLEY USED TER'S DEPENDED ON WHAT WING YOU WERE IN. 4 MAV'S BETWEEN 2 LAU-88'S WAS ALOT TO CARRY PLUS THE 4 MK'S OR CLUSTERS. YOUR PLANES PREFORMANCE IS GREATLY EFFECTED BY HOW ITS IS LOADED. CHECK THIS LINK OUT,MY HOG LOADED DURING DESERT STORM,THIS IS A REAL LOAD,MIGHT BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT BUT NOT MUCH AS FAR AS AMOUNT. http://community.webshots.com/sym/image ... gWB_ph.jpg BUT I DONT MIND ANSWERING QUESTIONS,BUT DONT DO THE "WTF" OR TALK TO ME LIKE I'M SOME "NEWBIEE" JUST BECAUSE YOU USE "Warthog" FOR YOUR SCREEN NAME DONT MEAN YOU CAN DO "WTF" TO ANYONE HERE PRESS TO TEST Edited by - sgtgoose1 on Jun 18 2003 5:37 PM Edited by - sgtgoose1 on Jun 18 2003 5:39 PM |

Hey Goose its me...........like you couldnt figure that out. Anyhoo during the Kosovo campaign we were pretty well hung. 2xAIM9s ALQ131 2xrockets 2Mavs 2clusters and 3Mk82's. The Marines and their sorry excuse for an attack jet (F18) just about wet themselves whenever they walked by our jets. During OIF we hung the 2xAIM9 ALQ131 Litening II 2xrockets LAU88 2xMK82 2xGBU12 and full gun. I dont think there was anything else in the air that could display such an impressive amount of ugly. Is that enough wieght for ya Hog ? |

When we first arrived over at OIF we left our tanks on for a couple weeks. The options were discussed because I guess the pilots wanted to fly with them and punch them when they needed to. The F-111 tanks are useless to use because they are too long and you cant do a gunload with them on. The Sargent Fletcher tanks are shorter and you can do gunloads with them. I think the the factor that killed the idea was that neither type of tank has ballistic foam and is therefore forbiden from being used on a mission. |
