Great article. I know I don't have to say it here, but in almost no way is a B-52 a CAS asset. Snipe, how would you feel if you knew your CAS assets were dropping JDAMs and PGMs?? I know how uncomfortable that would make me feel. Remember the JDAM that killed the friendlies in Afghanistan? Would that have happened if the dudes were looking at their targets vice plugging coordinates into a JDAM from 50 miles away?? As a CAS pilot I feel like I need to see the good guys and the bad guys and as a FAC-A I would use PGMs as a last resort. I don't understand how many in positions of power can talk about CAS when they have no idea what it is... "Warthog 30 has left the building..." |

"It was difficult to distinguish friendly from enemy ... took several passes over the city to determine who they should shoot at." Do that in a Buff Get a bigger hammer |

I want an asset that if the enemy is in my DCZ, can come in with guns or rockets for close in killing power. I want an aircraft that can deliver ordnance using a simple bearing/distance with a visual smoke marker reference for the inevitable occasion when my GPS gizmo has taken a shit. I want a plane that i can say "See that house 250 meters from my smoke on bearing 150? We're taking fire from it...Smoke that fucker. A BUFF, great as it is, can't do any of that. What we the lowly grunt wants is the A-10. For my part, i don't give a damn about colatoral damage. I care about my team and the troops we're supporting, and getting the mission completed in one piece. I don't care if CBU's are 'inhumane'...there are times i'll want that grid square removed from the map. This quest for precision is just going to far. It seems the powers that be have forgetten that war is all about killing the enemy, not risking our own to minimize the enemy's civilian casualties. I agree with everything Snipe said. I believe he covered nearly everything I can think of. Overkill??? I'd kill a fly with a howitzer if I had one. |

Sweet article. It seams that there is no real vision for the future of CAS. Pretty sad, especially for the grunts.
