Hi Guys There were 3 versions of this patch issued - 1. Orange tabs with White writing 2. Orange tabs and Black writing 3. White tabs and Black writing. Can anyone tell me who would have been issued which patch ie ground crew/aircrew etc. Many thanks Jon |

I was a crewchief on the '89 Gunsmoke Team. I was the "APG A-Man" on the Intergrated Combat Turn (ICT) Team. The bright orange Bentwaters/Woodbridge Gunsmoke patches were not "issued". Those patches were designed to be sold for profit. Basically so we could have drinking money when we went to Vegas (HA,HA)! They came in time to be sold at the BW/WB Open House that year. I think that they sold for about $9. We were each given about 10 to sell. I wound up trading the majority of mine for patches and pictures from the static an flying display aircraft. I still have one of the patches displayed on my office wall. Hope that helps. |

MarkyP Can you confirm/deny another rumor? Was there just one 81 TFW team at Gunsmoke? There is a rumor that there were three (hence the three different patches), although I always thought it was one per unit. Thanks for the gouge, nice to hear from another 81st alum! Cheers! M2 |

M2, Only 1 team from BW/WB. However, there were 3 categories within the team. 1. Operations/Maintenance - Graded on -what else?- flying and maintenance. 2. Intergraded Combat Turn - which we won for the A-10 category and if I remember correctly, the whole competition and 3. Static Weapons Load. Each of these scores contributed to the final tally. The team was made up of maintenance and ops personnel from the 78th, 91st, 92nd and my old haunt the 510th. I think that there were only 2 other A-10 units there that year. One from Alaska and one from Conn(?). We and the Spang F-16's were the only USAFE units represented. Maybe that's where the multiple team rumor started. I miss being a USAFE Trained Killer! MarkyP Thanks for the clarification! I made it back to USAFE (Ramstein) from 95-99, and it was great being "home." I am at a NATO job now (SHAPE in Belgium) so I get to occasionally visit "home." I am hoping to get back to the Ipswich area next spring/summer on the motorcycle, I have been to the UK on several occasions since leaving nearly 20 years ago (dear God, has it been THAT long?!?), but not back to the twin bases. I need to make the pilgrimage! Live in Europe is too good, this is my third time over here and if I could figure out a way to permanently stay I would. I have a bud who does tactics at USAFE who came over in the military but got out while he was at Ramstein and just got a civilian job doing the same thing. He’s been there nearly 15 years now ,and I don’t blame him. My NATO job sucks only because I am stuck in an all-US office that is dominated by the Army, who is great to support on the battlefield but not the ones you want being in charge. They have a completely different mindset and ping waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much! Cheers! M2 |

The 'Swich'! Went to the 81st AGS Christmas Party at the Corn Exchange in '87. Great place. Won a bottle of wine as a door prize. We were doing post Christmas clean-up the other day and I ran across my pictures of Europe. AH, the memories! I guess you've checked out the Twin-bases web site. I did. I've never been back to it. It hurt too much to see everything run down. When I PCS'd almost everything was new or had been remodeled. I was at Ramstein just before Christmas 2001. Did the 'ESID' thing. Was great to eat schnitzel and drink lager bier again. That was my first deployment back to Germany in 10 years. The last time I was there I was at Leipheim for a Det rotation. We went to Garmisch and King Ludwig's castle. Oh, the Army thing. We did a Det Rotation to Sembach once and we were told not to go to this particular bar in K-town because the Army 'owned' it. Well, about 4 of our guys went. They started having problems until the Army found out they worked on Hogs. Our guys drank free the rest of the night. You know A-10 maintainers have alot in common with the Army. When you're forward deployed and you launch the jets, you become your own infantry (HA,HA)! |

Here's another question...I've just noticed that the generic GUNSMOKE patches I have have a different number of stars on them! The 1983 and 1985 ones have four stars, but the 1989 patch only as one! Is this significant? Hell if I know! I was just wondering if anyone did know! Cheers! M2 |

Wow, the 1995 and 1998 patches at http://www.usafpatches.com/gallery/comp01.shtml have two stars! I also noticed this discrepancy/difference in the William Tell patches on the same web page? Am I on to something here, or just on something?!? Cheers! M2 |

MarkyP I was just back visiting Ludwig's castle (Neuschwanstein) a few weeks ago while at the NATO School in Oberammergau. The dang bus left without me! I had to hike into Fussen and catch a train up to Munich then down to O'gau, took me 5 1/2 hours to get back! Still had a great time, Bavarian is heaven to me! Cheers! M2 |

M2 I would assume that you made good use of your time on the train by having a few beers and taking in the view? MarkyP |
