An A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” passes through a wall of blue water thrown-up by the automatic wash system used to wash the salt off the aircraft at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base South Carolina. Another taxes through the thick humid morning air of England Air Base LA headed to the large crowd gathered on the parking ramp ahead. Yet another is on final approach to landing on a foggy air base in England. Desert Storm is over and the A-10s are coming home. As A-10s taxied to their parking spots at their home bases following the Gulf War in 1991 they were greeted to a heroes welcome by family members, local communities , and the United States and her allies around the world. Everyone cheered their triumph return as one of the, if not the, brightest star of Operation Desert Storm. US Flags waved everywhere , home made signs were held high by children and grown-ups alike and everyone was sure the A-10 Warthog had been saved from the desert bone yard, and the pages of history, by their performance in the Gulf War. This was true in one sense, the A-10 would survive as an airframe because of Desert Storm but, the world of the A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” and the people who support, maintain, and fly her would never be the same again, chance was in the air...and some very big changes to say the least! Chapter I- Birth of an ugly duckling to swan of Desert Storm (Birth of the A-10 through Desert Storm) Chapter II- The storm is over but the aftermath remains (base closures/realignments, A-10s head to the bone yard) Chapter III- The mid-90s (Kosovo, Bosnia) Chapter IV- on a wing and a prayer (move of a depot and cracks in wings) Chapter V - Operation Iraqi Freedom (in case of war brake glass) Chapter VI- Into the future (Not your dad’s Warthog) HMFIC |
