Greetings..

I've noticed in photographs and on Models there are usually 4 or 5 red discs paintied on the top of the A-10.

There are usually located on the inner wings, and 2 more are locaed on the center fueselage.

This is really bugging me.

What are they and what purpose do they serve?

I thought the A-10 was single point refueled.

Each tank can and is refueled individually?

It is. But you can also refuel each tank individually.

it is rarely done, and I stress rarely. (over the wing) In 14 years on the hog I think we did it once, we had gone to fix a broke hog and the airfield did not have SPR.

NEVER HAD TO ON A-10'S ,DID ON T-39'S FOR THE AUX FUEL TANK AND THE GOOD OLD C-140'S.
THOSE WING TANKS HELD ALOT OF FUEL AND WHEN IT WAS COLD THE TANK WOULD START TO GLOW INSIDE<img src=newicons/anim_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> SCARED ME THE FIRST TIME.

I remember seeing a video once, I can't remember who produced it, where they stuck a camera in the wing to watch the fuel enter the tank. Turns out that static electricity was jumping all over the tank during refuels. It didn't ignite because the fuel vapor displaced enough oxygen to prevent combustion. Next time you gas something up just think about that. It's an "attention getter"!

I was an airline refueler in between active duty and my technician job. Fueled all kinds of heavy iron, both foreign and domestic. I was OTW an old Convair once with 100 LL. It was a big load of around 300 gallons a side. There was the glow inside of the tanks and on the filler neck. It is scary especially in high octane fuels. The static is caused by free falling fuels through the atmosphere like in OTW fueling. The inpurities picked up as it falls causes it. That is one reason amongst otheres that SPR is desireable even in smaller aircraft if it is available.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

I think LOW octane has a lower flash point rather than HIGH octane and thus more dangerouse, but it's all scary to me lol

Lower octane has a lower volitility rating.

Yeah low octane has a lower volatility because it has a lower vapor presuure due.
yeah I dont remember if it was Kittyhawk. It was a Convair and not a C54. It was charter outfit flying some sports team.
