Hello,

My name is Justin Pontius, I am 26yrs old, 6'2" have a masters degree in clinical psychology and have 20/20 vision.

I am considering the Air Force with hopes of flying an A-10, but have yet to contact a recruiter. Before I do though I was wondering if there is anything I should know.

One question I have..........is saying I want to fly A-10s like saying I want to run for President? What are my chances of making it?

If I don't make it through flight school......what happens to me and what are some good secondary jobs to apply for.

And is there any advice you can give me as far as pitfalls to watch out for and things to expect after I've signed on.

Thank you and I appreciate any advice you can give me,

Justin Pontius

Welcome aboard Justin. I am not a pilot type so I cant help you with your questions. However we do have a few Hawg Drivers out here. It is the weekend so the page may be a bit slow. Hang out for a couple of days and keep checking. I am sure the guys will be more than willing to answer your questions.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

You might also want to check out http://www.dynamictruth.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=1, a lot of UPT hopefuls get answers there. If you only want to fly the A-10, then you are better off trying to find a Guard unit that has them and seeing if you have a chance to compete for a slot with them. Even then, it is tough. Do you have your PPL? It would help.

If you go in and wash out of UPT, then the USAF might put you in the medical field based on your degree. Of course, you could also end up as an intelligence or services officer...it all depends on what the AF needs. You might get a choice in the matter, you might not.

Good luck, I am sure others will chime in here as well.

Cheers! M2

Hey Nelson, and M2

Thanks for getting back to me.

I haven't looked into the Guard yet because I would prefer to be Active Duty.

also .... as you mentioned I have just started working on my ppl and plan to have that under my belt before signing on. I'm also thinking about hiring a math tutor to brush up a little. Is there any particular type of math I should focus on?

another question I had was about my height. Is there a possibility it might be an issue??

Thanks again,

Justin

Most guard guys are active duty in my opinion.

The only thing that seperated active airforce from guard is their chain of command.

Ive known several guard guys that were just as active if not more so than the actives.

With OPS tempo taken place now as well as keeping the training squares filled and other administrative flights. You could get your fill once quals are met.

But like anything else. its based on your levels of proficiency and experiance.

There are very few A10 drops out of UPT at this time. So if you only want to fly the A10, guard is the way to go. I only wanted to fly the A10 when I started, but now I realize that getting paid to fly is the best deal ever, even with the pressures of being a student...

One more thing, to get to the A10, you have to be selected for T38's for advance training, which is not an easy task. But it is doable if your a good stick and out work the rest of your class. I select in the not to distant future, so I will let you know how it goes.

Best of luck.

didn't mean to imply I had anything against the guard......just didn't know they fit what I was looking for.....I'm new to all this so I appreciate all the help I can get in figuring out what all is what.

Thanks,

Justin

PS: Saying you want to be an A10 pilot isn't really like saying you want to be the President, its more like saying you want to be God.

MM, when is your track select?

Poke,
I should track select around april. I am going through Primary with the Navy in Milton Fl, so it's a little slower than AF UPT. Ive heard that at UPT bases you fly 2 or 3 times daily. We've been getting weather canceled for almost 2 weeks now, its pretty frustrating. I had to rent a cessna over the weekend just to get in the air.

The Navy is different than the AF in that you are still apart of a class, but everyone seams to be going at there own pace. So its difficult to know exactly when we will finnish. I think they are still working out the bugs with the new system. I'll let you know how it goes. How is life flying the 135 in Japan? Getting alot of flt time?
