After reading that Coach has had a 20 year career in the Hog it got me thinking. What can a pilot do to stay with a particular type? For example, if a pilot decides during his first operational tour that the best flying to be had is in the Hog rather than the 'computer driven' Viper (highly likely), can a pilot request an A-10 for his next assignment....and subsequent assignments? I know the Guard is the best sure-fire way to stay with the airframe of your choice, as long as that unit operates your choice. The ANG manage to have a huge wealth of experience for this reason. In the RAF a pilot probably will sacrifice a speedy climb through the ranks if they stay in the cockpit and away from a desk tour, the flipside is they will have a whole heap of flying hours and experience.....just wondered how it worked in the USAF.? |

Otherwise, you generally get one, possibly two ops tours in your MWS. After that, most everyone will be required to do some sort of aforementioned ALFA or overseas short tour. Pretty soon, guys can even choose to stay in the "computer-driven" Hog versus the "computer driven" viper. |
