Where did the tradition of placing a US flag in the forward waindscreen come from and is this an CAF wide tradition or local?

I don't know, but one of our pilots in the 45th had one that when you flipped it over it said "F@@k You Commies".

Our pilots tended to keep nude pictures on the backs of theirs, and they'd flip them around when they came through the hot pits. As far as the tradition of it, I'm not sure...

If I had to guess, though: Map packs/cases may have had various pictures and Old Glory just kind of stuck around out of all of them. A kind of Pilot's nose art, if you will...

I remember a 'Panther' Hog visiting the Mildenhall Air Fete the year Frank Sinatra died, proudly displaying a Time magazine with the great man on the cover in the usual spot reserved for the Stars 'n' Stripes (or maps)

I know there was a pilot at Shaw that did in '93ish. Not sure where the tradition started though.

I think it was Woodbridge where I saw the first flag, it was in a Blue Streak jet in about August 88.
Some of the WR birds had flags on both sides of the cockpit.

I worked 80-0205, 80-0271 while I was over there, 280 was Leons' jet.

I may have mentioned it before, I remember seeing both 205 and 271 together at the same airshow at Biggin Hill in June 1990.
The lead pilot was Tim McDonald who in 91 had the honour of being the last USAFE Hog Demo pilot.

I worked 271 when I first go there, but it was taken away from me when it went to gunsmoke in 89. The pilots name dosent sound famiular.

Dice: Again, no real help to the original question, but at Spang, I'd say 80%+ of our drivers kept flags in the windscreen...unfortunately all the "cool" pictures on the flipside seem to gone by the way side as some of them rotated out.

On a related note, we had one pilot roll through hot pits, and we asked himw hy he didn't have any nice pictures with him...after some ball busting, he finally pulled out his grease pencil and drew some boobs on his canopy and flew his last go with them. Oddly enough, he drew them on the right spot so that when he taxied in at the end of his second sortie, it looked like they had been drawn to look like they were on him.

About half of the guys (mostly the young ones) flew with flags on the glareshield when I was at Bentwaters in 84.
