I Sparticus.....heard a rumour of a stealthy A-10 being flown in Iraq. What say you A10stress? I understand you might have some insight on this subject. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Was going through pictures on my computer & found this...I think this is the A-10S (S for Stealth, notice the angled design like the F-117)<img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_bannana.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/bounce.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_bannana.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/bounce.gif border=0 align=middle>

Gifted we use that stuff on the F-16 and it is the absoulute worst. It is hard to apply, hard to maintain, impossible to keep clean and when it is time to take it off you almost need a hammer and chisel to do it. I would not wish this stuff on the A-10 community.

It had the in-house designation of A-10X. It had a new, thinner, flat wing, a pointy nose (oh no Mr. Bill!), funky inlets with internal shielding, a swept leading edge extension for the inner wing, pointy nose gear pods that completely enclosed the gear, actuated doors for the gun muzzle and the UARRSI, RAS & RAM all over. It was a complete waste of time, but it taught me things about retrofitting radar camouflage on existing airframes. Don't. Better to start over instead. We should have spent the time and effort on IR passive and active countermeasures in order become the industry experts on that. This stuff is like the fashion industry, you have to go with the fads or nobody returns your phone calls.

That is outstanding work...did you do it yourself! It would look cool on a t-shirt for HAWGSMOKE, if anyone is inclined!

Thankfully, it was a classified project. I had hopes that all records were destroyed, and wiped my memory clean of it (my eyes, my eyes, ahhh), and now Spartacus says it was spotted over Iraq. There you go. It does you no good to radar camouflage if you fly so close to the enemy they can see you with the Mk 1, Mod 0 eyeball sensor.

Seriously, would you mind if I made it into a t-shirt? I think our rinky-dink BX at Chièvres Air Base has some of those things you can run through your computer printer and then iron on a t-shirt. I think it would make an awesome t-shirt, would you mind?

Internally we called it A-10X, but it had a code name too, either SENIOR PROM, or SENIOR CITIZEN. I have CMS today (Can't Member Sh**).

No sir...wouldn't mind (especially if say maybe you could somehow acquire a new Panthers coin for me<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>)

But in all honesty...if you wanna make a T Shirt...go for it...

I've worked on F-16 AME. I can definitely see problems with it. In my experience you can pretty much peel some of it off with your fingers. Keeping it clean is the hard part, not even Regel can do that well.

How dificult would it be to paint F-117 style radar absorbing paint on it though? And what abput replacing the outerpanels with carbon composites?

The "paint" on the F-117 is a few millimeters thick. And probably more fragile than HAVGLASS. Composite panels might help, but alot of the jet doesn't come off. I'd tell you more about why they wouldn't use RAM, but I'm not sure how much I could say without getting in trouble.

Ya know A10Stress, I wasnt permitted to discuss it either but now that the cat is out of the bag, I happened to see that steath A10 land while sitting at the end of a runway at HollomanAFB! I was on my lovely "checking to make sure the landing gear was down duty" and I think it was all black and a 2 seater at that! I tell ya, it was the fastest Hog I ever saw! Guess they were adding more than the 117 maybe? Who knows!

Instructors do it best!

During one of my earlier "Company" assignments a month or so after 9/11. I had it on good authority that they were launching out of one of the "Stans" Tore up several Hajii's at night. Taking out sam Sites and so forth. Task Force Dagger and a handfull of ***classified*** were preparing the ground work so the 14 Delta's could come in and do their precision bombing.

We called it "Taliban TV" The tapes these crews were bringing back was fantastic.

I Seen a few at Edwards around oh say Late 90's before I left the AF for my new assignment with the "Company".

Of course, the Idea of Smashing rocks and spooning with Bubba is not my idea of a good time for the rest of my life.

So I aint saying nothen about nothen.......

Man, anyone got a picture of this thing or some kind of specs for it?

If any of that were to somehow anonymously find it's way into my email i would be most grateful. :)
