Why the link between Hogs and Vipers?

Maybe this is an ignorant question, but how come it seems like Hogs and Vipers are always together? Squadrons get Hogs, then Vipers. Or start with Vipers and move to Hogs. What's with the relationship?

I believe it has to do w/their missions. Hog drivers find it easier to go from a Hog to a Viper then a Hog to an Eagle. This is in part due to the ground mission aspect of the Viper. The eagle being strictly air to air don't usually want a strictly ground to ground guy/gal. Any one agree.... P2B

Has Nothing to Do with any of the Above.

The Fact is. Their happens to be 3 times the number of Vipers in service. A large part of the A10 Fleet being sent to the preservation farm, and the AF buying new blocks of vipers has Placed those Blk 30 Vipers in previously A10 Squadrons. Also much of what the Guard and Reserve Operates is passed down From the Active Service. Some big transformations in the New ACC of the 90's is what brought this about.

What this means is that an Ops to Ops assignment to an A10 is reserved for Future patch Wearers, and may not be seen again without a Major break in time for new duties, OR hopefully you will luck out with AFPC and get a followon Flying assignment in a differnt airframe. F117/F16 yada Yada or a UAV assignment.

Next you add in your Education level and other opportunities present themselves, Career performance may even afford you an Instructor position at FWIC or in Training Aircraft. If you are an engineer their are the FTE/FTP tracks that can keep you busy for a great deal of time.

Now with the F15E we are talking a slightly differnt community. This is the 2 man Aircrew vs the Single seat Aircrewed aircraft. In the past the Fighter and Bomber tracks were some what seperate. Today they are more combined. In order to fill an F15E you need to include a NFO/WSO. What happens here again is that Several 2 man aircrewed Bombers were Sent to the preservation farm in the early 90's. The F15E is a 1988 Aircraft Forward. This is where many of the F111, B1, F4 people ended up.

What typically takes place is that the Nose Gunners in F15E's come from the Viper or F15C community, and then what NFO's are left in Service or they train New ones Fresh out of the Joint NFO school and then Upgrade them to the aircraft.

The truth is. It has absolutely nothing to do with Follow on skillsets. On the Tactical level and experiance wise. A10 pilots are more than capable of aquiring the Skillsets provided in the Mudhen Upgrade. Everyone has to do the Upgrade training. From the Cherry 1LT straight out of Advanced. The the salty LtCol taking command of a Squadron. Their is no preferentual treatment. All have to be trained and crewed up to Pass the training.

I think now we are getting to the Time were more and more "Younger" folks are getting their turn into the F15E and those guys that have hit the 10-12 year mark and choose to stay in the service are getting them as well.

The avionics are easy to teach. Building a "Tactical Aviator" is were the real challenge lays.

F15E is a small numbered force. Like the a10. So the argument can go both ways. Guys flying Vipers can have some good success in Follow on Ops assignments because their are 3 times as many units operating them. But everyone hits that Career investment period where you will need to leave the Cockpit.

Skillsets, schmillsets. Mudd, you've been around long enough to know the personnel weinies don't know Jack about skill sets, mission commonality or anything else of the sort. It was all about numbers...2000 Vipers meant cockpits that needed to be filled, any pilot would do.
