My roomie says there's no way this was a missile; a missile would have done more damage. I disagree. Who's right?

The damage was caused by a missile, If I remember correctly it was shortly after KC's aircraft was damaged and landed at a FOL.

It also could have been where a flightsuit insert forgot to turn on the inverter during a start<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_bow.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_bannana.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

Lil H - That's the one. Does anybody know any more details?

Also, why would forgetting to turn on an inverter cause an engine to frag like that?

It's still flying at Battle Creek. The engine you see in the pic is sitting outside our hanger. A new one was hung in the desert and the plane was flown back here during the normal rotation. Flew it the other day.

80-0258 was at Hawgsmoke 2004 if I recall correctly.

It was just a joke.....forgetting to turn the inverter on during an engine start usually produces a nice strem of vaporized fuel out the exh. Weel the inverter powers the ignitors(spark plugs) and if the inverter is off then no spark.......yuo usually hear "i am not geting a light off, then the cc asks is you inverter on? but if it isnt dont....BOOM " that is when the pilot turns on the inverter.

I have never seen it blow out an eng like the pic, like I said it was just a joke, all it usually does is give a hot start, then the eng needs borescoped which can be a pain in the a$$ if ya get my drift

LOL I get it. I think my buddy had that happen to him once while he was doing a GPU start on a Lear... I guess the fireball almost cooked him!

Did they ever find out what kind of missile hit 258? My roomie thinks that if a missile had hit it and exploded it would have done a lot more damage (I think he's just arguing for the sake of arguing now<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>).

It would have done a lot more damage if it was any other aircraft.

The type of missile has been determined, but I'm not sure if it's been released yet. You may have to search AF press releases to determine if the information is publicly available yet.

Let's just say your roomie is wrong.

Great pics, just think had that been one of those lawn darts, we'd be a pilot and aircraft short. The Hawg kicks ass even after taking a beating. Hell that bird might still have finshed the sortie before commin home code one
