This one statment caught my eye... "The inserts are made of a foam designed to dissolve when it comes into contact with fluids, she said." Is this true? I was always told the foam will turn into a fire retardent GAS when hit! Is she getting balistic foam mixed-up with self-sealing tanks or maybe the fuel foam inside the tanks themselves? |

Yeah she has definetly got it cofused. As a matter of fact I am still trying to figure out if the it is ballitic foam or void filler foam. The one would serve to slow down shrapnel the other would be to fill a void where excessive fuel vapors could get trapped if the aircraft was seriosly damaged. I think it may be a combination od both but I am coming up nill in the TO's as to the real purpose. It is refered to as both ballistic foam and void filler foam. The foam itself is stamped as void filler. I never checked the TO to see if the stuff that lines the fuel cell and the stuff packed in the external panels and up in the flap and slat bays is actually the same stuff. Hmmmm..............more stuff for this TODO to look up next week. By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson |

Hawg166, all the foam (outside the fuel tanks) is the same foam, in fact we had a heck of a time finding some support the SLEP program. We found it but only in large blocks which have to be cut for each section. |

Dice, Took me some time to find the article you were talking about, guess I'll learned to check out http://www.warthogpen.com before af.mil ----------------------------------------------------------------- "The inserts are made of a foam designed to dissolve when it comes into contact with fluids, she said." "It melts when fuel touches it and turns into like a jelly that helps plug up the holes and seal them," she said. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Ok, last time I remember draining fuel out of the sump drains. Fuel typically got all over the foam and it never turned to jelly. I do know that it deteriorated it somewhat and caused it to become detached from the airframe, but never to the extent that she's talking. Now if the foam was to actually soak in a bucket of JP4/8 for a couple of days then maybe that could happen. Additionaly, why would you want the holes to seal up? If the cell is damaged and leaking into the airframe wouldn't you want it to drain instead of becoming trapped and creating even more of a fire hazard?
