I was asked this question during Hawgsmoke and had no answer. I'm sure most of you know of the F-4 Society ( http://www.f4phantom.com/homepage.asp ) so why no A-10 Society? Is it because something like this is normaly formed after an airframe is retired? Seems to me the best time to form would be during the aircraft's life before it's history is lost in the mist of time.

Just thought I would bring-up the subject to maybe plant a seed in someones mind......

I agree. I love the A10 community and think there should be an A10 organisation or society. I know there is one forming for the F14 also.

No a society has to have dues and a motto like the royal order of the water buffalos, and a lot of goofey old men like on the Honeymooners.

The F-4 Society is registured as a non-profit org. and must file taxes and all that goes with a non-porfit org. No this forum, this site, nor any other site I know of quals.

You're right! The A-10 Association or Society would have to do the same and it doesn't happen overnight. Many folks would have to be involved in it. Personnaly, I like the idea and it's not too late to start something like this. The F-4 Society was borned long before the type was retired from active service. A few years ago, four guys and I created the FB-111A Association to preserve the legacy of the aircraft and the folks who served with the type. I had created the site years before and the idea came up quite like now with the A-10.

Something to think about and let's see where is the interest out there.

Philippe.

Well people what are your thoughts on the matter? Would you pay a yearly due to support such an effort? The (a) website could have a "members only area" with stuff like nose/door art or, current news events could be posted there a couple of weeks before being posted on the main site.

Hawg166, you can't ever be a member because of your "old men" comment!

Philippe, why do you say there would have to be many people involved and it would take a long time? I thought anyone (even 1 person) could register as a non-profit org. and run it as long as they payed their taxes and had the orgs. books open for audit?

Any info you can give would really help.

My biggest problem with starting a "Society" is the non-profit side of it. If I started this does that mean anything I receive through the website can't be use for profit? Say Nose and ladder door art, would it mean I couldn't write a book and sell it?
I'm going to look into this a little more and try to get some of these questions answered.

Before you start the Society, you have to set goals for it, its purposes, membership, financing and other things. After that, register the Society as a non-profit, get a mailing adress, create a website to publicize it. Will you have a membership, fees? How will you finance this venture? The profits of whatever you sell through the Society has to stay there. You cannot mix your own sales with the society's own. Some kind of conflict? Don't you think?
Unless you have a lot of free time on your hands, you won't be able to do it all by yourself. It takes a lot of things to keep the Society going. What about the websites A-10.net and A-10.org? Woulb be a good idea to integrate the two in the Society.

Philippe, I understand what you're saying and this may be more than I'm willing to undertake right now. I would join an A-10 Society but don't think I have the resorces to start/run one.

And you thought it was going to be easy! If i wasn't already involved with the FB and my own websites, I would volunteer!
My suggestions for whoever want to go head with the A-10 Society; form a team of five which will include a pilot, maintenance and crew chief with a lot of experience and desire to share their knowledge about the aircraft. Just like with the FB-111A, there are things you will never hear about or/and read. So, stick to the aircraft and the folks who fly, maintain and work on it. One important thing you need is the support of every unit, starting with the C/Os, etc...

It could be a lot of fun! Long live the Hog!
