was talking to a m8 of mine and he recons that pilots are bored 99% of the time.. is this true?

also i heard that the JSF will have a helmet mounted display that will allow the pilot to look around without seeing the plane.. would u rather have a cockpit or an non-obscured view?

I suppose it depends on the plane. F-117 pilots have got to be bored, with the plane flying itself and such. You might as well make it a UAV. Type7 can elaborate more on that one.

Mudd, you just pick on crew chiefs, or do weapons ever get the ire too?<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

There are a few pilots out there who aren't bored all the time, like fighter jocks, ag pilots, or those guys who fly power line and pipeline inspection. Other than that, yeah I'd say pilots are bored 99% of the time. It's that other 1% of the time that'll make ya earn your money.

Yojimbo, I think you're thinking of that saying that "flying (fighters) is hours of boredom, followed by moments of sheer terror."

Generally speaking, yes. But a big part of the job is insuring the plane is doing what it's supposed to do. 117s automation has too many ways it can kill you....mainly through inadverant disengagement, garbage info, or queer-trons. Main part of the workload other than that is the actual target attack itself, finding the exact DMPI (building corner, particular window, etc) and guiding the bomb in.

Besides the actual takeoff and landing, I otherwise may as well be wearing Navigator wings.......lol

Yeah Mudd, As an airline DORK I can say its F'ing Boring! The only job satisfaction I get is when I make a smooth landing. BTW there is always a female type flight attendant involved in the landing.

If you're bored while flying, you're not paying attention. Or else, you're being lazy and not pushing yourself or wingmen enough. Either way, you are wasting time, money and gas. Someday, you'll die relaxed.

Push it up!

Seems to me if you're bored flying, you're not appreciating the gifts and opportunities the good Lord has given you, over the other 99% of the populace!

JSF, yes it does have a system to provide more viewing area. IT is an aircraft that is diving deeper into the matureing helmet Cueing and display technologies,

Honestly though.. Between the Raw, the Radio, My wingmen, and having just dropped 2000 pounds of U.S. Diplomacy on Hajji's lap. I know for a fact that i have stirred the hornets nest and know with pure certainty the counterfire has allready began. Do i really need to see it. Not really, too many other things are telling me to Jink, Pop and Crank on the egress.

My greatest advantage is the Grunt on the ground or my wingmen telling me where the big hole in the sky theory is and where i shouldnt be to get there.
