Hey fellas, I was just curious about exactly how you get selected for an A-10 pilot slot. I know you get the choice of flying on a tactical type of aircraft but what I wasnt sure about is if you get a further choice of what specific airframe you can pilot. I'd be willing to bet it would be one of those "needs of the air force" things...but was just wondering if they take your wants into any consideration. Thanks for the info..and feel free to drop me a line on my AOL IM in my profile. |

Hey Tiger, If you want to make sure you get A-10's, your best bet would be to apply to a Guard/Reserve unit that fly's them. There are 6 guard and 1 or 2 reserves units that have them. If you try and go active duty, it's pretty much the luck of the draw. |

Thanks Plane, that's pretty much what I expected. Only thing about the Guard/Reserve slots is I think they are alot more competative to the point where you actually have to know somebody. Edited by - JerseyTiger on Oct 19 2004 10:02 AM |

Would you rather have a job because you knew someone, or because you earned it? Either way, it will show in your performance. Coach |

I know where your coming from Tiger, but if you really want it that much, you have to be willing to give everything you have to get it. If you're around a unit, call a recruiter and ask them to take you around the base. Go over and meet a few of the pilots. Don't forget they may have the best job around, but they are still human beings. |

Tiger, Welcome to the political world of being in the military. Networking is a major part of it, but once you get the position your after it's up to you to prove you deserved it. capche-capche da - we go forward together Faugh ah Ballaugh -Clear The Way- |

Im not too worried about the political side of the military, granted Im not the type that will brown-nose his way to the top. I guess Im just going to count on my past aviation experiences as a KC-135 crew chief and -135 boom operator coupled with a little bit of determination to get there. Thanks for the insight guys. |
