I'm researching a load out for a 1/32 Trumpeter I'm planning out. I've looked through all the ordanance threads I can find, but I need a little info on the SUU-25. I've seen in several threads that a SUU-25 was mounted on station 10. It was mostly for night missions, but a lot of times they were loaded day and night for the ease of the loaders. Anyway, the question I have concerns it's appearance. I've googled it, and the only pics I can find are of someone loading flares in the decoy despenser. Obviously, if a SUU-25's being loaded on a weapons station, that ain't it. Basically, I need to know what the thing looks like. Does it look like a regular LAU pod and just have a different load internal? Does anyone have any pics of it they can link me to?

Its bigger around than a LAU-131 pod and longer also. If you are viewing in from the rear you will see four tubes. Each tube holds two flares.

The best pictures of that pod would be on a jet at EOR with yet another hung flare. LOL.

the SUU-25 pod is about 6 feet long and about 1.5 feet long. It has four tubes that are about 5 inches in diameter. Each tube has 2 either LUU-2 or LUU-1 flares (Depenendent on the station it's being loaded on). The pod is safed electrically and the pin is on the side of the pod about half way down. The front has a thin dome on it that serves as a drag reducer as well as a protector for the electronics. Any LUU-5s or 6s around anymore?

I have never heard of the them to be honest with you. I've been doing this for 8 years and if the A-10 employs them, I have never heard of it.

LUU-1, 5 and 6's are all the same thing, only different colors. They are ground illumination markers, called logs. They burn for about 30 minutes. Hardly ever see these anymore now that we all use NVGs. Same with LUU-2's, parachute illumination flares. They have about 2 million candlepower and burn for 5 minutes, plus or minus. We don't really use these that much anymore, either. We now use LUU-19s. Same canister, just different.

We used them exclusively with the Bronco. Cause you needed more than 5 minutes To figure out what was a Tank and what was a water buffalo <img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

IF we had an Artillary observer with us and we were in range of a Gun, It was so much easier to have them drop the Illumn, and then use ours specifically for the Fighters.

They do have a fall back. IF you dont cap above them high enough, you get illuminated (silhouetted) in the process. 200Knots is not the place to be with binos loitering for targets with a Noisy Turbo prop and Tracked AAA roaming around.

We were Virtually killed many times at NTA for this. I am really glad things have changed and we have systems today to work in total darkness.

Yup. Have only seen/used the -1s in my lifetime. Never did see the -5s or -6s, which is why I was wondering if they're still around.

I know -1s were red. If I remember right, -5s were green and -6s were brown, or something like that....don't have my old battle book in front of me here.

Check this out weapons troops......a f%ck-up on Global Security.org. I ask you, does this look anything like a SUU-25 in the pic? Funny thing is, the text even describes it as a "tubular metal body". LOL.

Hey Type 7...That's an intersting SUU-25. I could see to the vey, very untrained eye possibly getting it wrong. I at least give them kudos for having flares in the picture

Mr.Mudd...the Bronco...is that the OV-10 bronco? If it is, is the civilian counterpart the Cessna Skymaster? Good ole push/pull job.

Type 7...they are 14 in lug spacing becasue they go on station 2 or 10 which has the MAU-50 bomb rack which only has 14 in lugs, whereas the MAU-40 (stations 3-9) has both 30 and 14 inch lugs...cheers

Cool, thanks. I couldn't remember if the pod used the 30s or 14s lugs.......remember now with the MAU-50s on 1/2/10/11.

Doesnt the DEA still employ some of the Broncos down South in the drug wars ? When I was in the Navy reserve in Marrietta GA back in the early 90's I seem to remember some of the marines telling me that was where there OV-10's were headed.

Fourteen inch hooks and it goes straight on the plane. You're making me dig out my CDCs, which I probably should have done in the first place.

I'm thinking of the LUU-2. I'll take your word for the others, I can't find the SUU-25 or the other LUUs in the things. At least I know what I'm talking about now.
