OK, I am calling someone out on a comment made on a different forum, and I need some support here. Someone made the following comment concering the F-111...

When I was at AGOS at Sembach back in the mid-90s there was an O-6 there who claimed BUFFS did more CAS than A-10s in DESERT STORM. He was quickly called out as well, and I think this guy is spouting BS as well. Anyone know where I can get the "official" stats?

I cant remember where the actual numbers are, however I clearly rember at a commanders call after DS-I when we returned, it was stated theat we (the hogs) flew 33% of all USAF missions, and destroyed X amount of all tanks/vehicles etc. I cant seem to find the hard numbers for ya but it did happen.

Concur. Despite the way it was developed, the F-111 was a great jet, for the most part. I worked EF-111s at Mountain Home (390 ECS) back in the mid-80s.

However, all that said, I doubt the Varks did more tank killing than the beloved Hawg!

Hey dont forget my jet.............oops sorry Goose, I mean our jet 80-166 got one of those air to ground kills. A Mig-23 in a hangar I believe. Goose ifin you are out there I have the total for 166 but not handy. You can fill us in.

I know the F-111 did a lot of "tank pinking" during DS but don't know what the numbers were compared to the hawg?? I do work in the A-10 SPO (which used to be the A-10/F-111 SPO) and I'm sure I can find out. I have to be down-town (World Wide Review) all day tomorrow but I can looking into it Monday.

YEP,OLD GIRL 0166 GOT A MIG 21 FEB 16 1991 HIDDING IN A GARAGE ALONG A ROAD IN WESTERN IRAQ WHILE DOING SCUD HUNTING IN THE LATER DAYS. PILOT WAS CAPT VAIL. HE WAS PISSED THAT 0166 WASNT A VTR BIRD BACK THEN GOT IT WITH CBU'S.
0166 HAD BY MY RECORDS 27 TANKS BY WARS END ALONG WITH 3 FROGS,3 RADAR SITES/SAMS SITES 30+ TRUCKS 16 APC'S 18 AAA SITES.
I NEVER SAW THE ACTUAL CONFIRM TOTAL AFTER THE WAR BUT THE TANKS AND THE MIG 21 I WROTE ON MY LATER DOOR ON FEB 26TH THE NIGHT BEFORE I WENT HOME.
BUT THE NUMBERS ARE WHAT I HAD WROTE DOWN ON MY HAT FLAP.

now the question is will those a-10 air 2 air kills be the last gun kills for the airforce. The next question will be when was the last gun kill by the airforce prior to the a-10's taking out the choppers.

M2, the F-111 is credited with destroying 950 tanks <b>and armored vehicles</b> but the info I have doen't break it out to tanks V ACPs. If you add the Hawgs tanks and ACPs from the above list, like the 111 does, you would have well over 1400.

I'll dig a little deeper to try to find a number just for tanks if you need it.

BTW- my info comes from the Sacramento Air Longistics Center (A-10/F-111 SPO) Historical Study NO. 100 dated September 1992.

major........looks like we have some common ground. I worked Hogs at Norvenich '83-'87. Interesting place and times. Also worked Varks at P'burgh and Lakenheath. Both jets have some unique capabilities. The F model varks with pave-tac could do some serious terrain remodeling. Saw some pave-tac video of tank bombing in '91 from 30k feet. Don't want to be on the end of that. Saw a hog make a lowlevel AB attack where the pilot had to climb to get over the trees surrounding the base. Nads....

I DONT THINK YOU'LL EVER GET A "BAD" WORD ABOUT A VARK OR SPARKVARK HERE.
IT WAS A GREAT PLANE IN MY BOOK.

Its really to bad the Vark never worked as a Navy jet. Would have had a bad ass strike package with A-6's F-111's and F-14's. That would hav been a real deep interdiction package.

You know, if I'm not mistaken, I think the last gun kills by the USAF prior to the A-10s, were the two B-52s that each knocked down a MiG-21 during the Linebacker II Christmas bombings of Hanoi in December 1972........one knocked down by a SSgt, and one by an A1C. What the last fighter air-air gun kill was prior to DS I don't know off the top of my head, but likely an F-4 from earlier than LB II.

I would guess this stands for Air Base and not After Burnner? <img src=newicons/tard.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

Yes, AB stands for airbase. I'm an ex-crew chief. F-4D,F-16A&B, A-10, FB-111A, F-111F. While at Norvenich I was crew dog, expeditor, xtrained to eng and hyd, ABDR team leader, white area tech and second man egress qualified.

If I recall, it was pitched to both the Air Force and Navy. The Navy was impressed but didn't bite. Weight was the biggest factor that the Navy couldn't get over. A proposal for a lighter variant was then pitched, but by then Grumman had slid their foot and the Tomcat into the door.

Actally the Tommy grew out of the F-111 and wasnt a pitch instead of the Vark. The navy atempted what they called a catastrophic weight loss program for the 111 but it was to no avail. The landing gear was also a difficult for the Navy as far as the Vark went.
Hey Dice here is a history question for you. When was the last Pheonix missile fired from the F-111 if in fact it ever did fire one ?
