USAF Introduces Improved A-10 Warthog Jet
By LAURA M. COLARUSSO

The U.S. Air Force today unveiled the A-10C Warthog at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The A-10C is an upgraded version of the service’s dedicated close-air-support jet.

The modifications, which Eglin officials are calling the most significant technological upgrade of the aircraft since 1972, include new instrumentation and the addition of precision guided munitions. The A-10C also features a tactical awareness display, a two dimensional display of where forces are on the ground.

“It’s a dramatic improvement,” said Maj. Trey Rawls, an A-10 test pilot based at Eglin. “It allows the pilot to have a lot better situational awareness.”

Air Force officials are hoping to upgrade all of the more than 350 A-10s by 2011. Ogden Air Logistics Center at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, is overseeing the $300 million project.

Same story here...http://www.airforcetimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-618407.php

It was a pretty cool ceremony, like Dice said, many more pics are on the way, including the first flight....

Only thing I can say about the roll out is they couldn't have picked a better jet to be the 1st A-10C.

How will this affect T.O.s? I mean say a squadron has half of its jets as A-10C's and half are still A-10A's, will we be able to use the 1A-10A-2-whatever for normal stuff, or what? Or will only specs T.O.'s be affected?

There are 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand Binary, and those who don't.

Light a candle and pray it doesn't happen that way! It will suck to be a TODO. You will need to maintain separate T.O.'s. An example would be Block 30 F-16C's can't use block 40 F-16CG's TO's.

I'll leave the fielding questions to Dice, but there will be a whole new set of A-10C T.O.'s (complete libraray). Cleetus is right, the first jet is a great flyin' Hawg. Can't wait to see her loaded up with some lives...Just hope her sister ship changes her ways now, cause she likes to be a stubborn bitch sometimes...

Bit to early to go into this at this time, there are a lot of factors which will be looked at but, the main one will be who is deploying where, when.

You know, the question on who gets them first is an interesting question. As I recall, the changes are so significant that once a pilot transitions to the upgraded jet he won't be bouncing back and forth between A models and C models.
I would imagine one of the training squadrons at D-M would be high on the priority list. I don't know if a transition plan like we used for EGI, where each unit had a mix of jets as they flowed out of depot, would work with the C model. The C model, as far as the operator end of it is concerned, is an entirely different airplane.
I'm sure there would be a lot of gnashing of teeth between the units, but it would almost make sense to get a pool of jets upgraded and do a mass swap out, a unit at a time. Of course it would mean each unit would drop their C rating for a period of time, but it would be a clean change over for ops and maintenance.
Cheers

is the AF taking any out of storage(DM) or just swapping what's already in service?

Yeah mugs 989 is a great flying jet. Before it went to mods it flew 26 code 1's out of 27 flights. Think everyone needs to know that 989 is still up under the nose to tail warranty, we have less than 2500 hrs on this hawg.
