Continued Deployment of A-10 Full Mission Trainers to United States Air Force

Recently, the U.S. Air Force purchased three additional MetaVR rackmounted systems with streaming terrain database technology for the A-10 full mission trainer program to be used in both domestic and overseas-based U.S. Air Force installations.

These latest systems bring the total of visual systems purchased for this program to 10, fielded for simulators at 9 sites. (See the table of currently fielded sites.)

In some installations, the MetaVR multi-channel visual systems replace existing, legacy visuals in A-10 training simulators. The balance of the training sites listed in the table of currently fielded sites below are receiving completely new A-10 FMT systems. All new and replacement visual systems are delivered with the distributed mission trainer (DMT) model set that is part of the MetaVR VRSG version 4 3D model library.

The rackmount PC-based visual systems use a terrain database streaming from a central source, which eliminates the need for large storage capacity on each individual visual computer. Because hard drives with a large storage capacity are no longer needed, the size of each image generator can be reduced to low profile 2U (1U = ¾ inch) high containers. The storage requirements for each image generator are for the Windows operating system and the VRSG application. High-speed 15,000 rpm SCSI drives are typically used to house the operating system and the VRSG software.

The MetaVR rackmount computer system uses 2U high containers to house the visual channels. All data for the terrain databases resides on the 4U RAID storage unit near the bottom of the cabinet just above the two redundant power supply units. The terrain data streams across the gigabit Ethernet network from the RAID storage device to the visual channels during a real-time flight simulation. In this configuration, terrain databases can be stored centrally and the visual channels can have relatively small hard drives (such as 36 GB) for the operating system and VRSG rendering software. The advantage of this configuration is that only a single copy of the terrain database is required for a multi-channel visual system. This helps facilitate configuration management of data and nearly eliminates the redundant hard drive storage requirements across the multiple visual channels. Terrain database upgrades in the field can be performed by shipping a single RAID device per rackmount visual system. The network throughput is such that even at high aircraft speeds, there are no perceptible visual anomalies due to network latencies while streaming data across the multi-channel display. The configuration shown here provides for 12 visual channels, 1.85 terabyte SCSI RAID storage for terrain databases, and two uninterruptible power supplies.

The visual systems were delivered with MetaVR VRSG version 4 software, which contains a 3D vehicle model library. The library of approximately 200 unique models includes the distributed mission training (DMT) 3D model set at no additional charge. The new A-10 model has most of its control surfaces modeled as well as a refueling port. In-air refueling scenarios can now be simulated by using the A-10 model with its fuel port and the KC-135 model with its articulated refueling boom.

MetaVR was initially awarded the contract to provide a PC-based image generator to the A-10 Full Mission Trainer in July 2001. The original award consisted of five sites, which were installed and put to use in training in October 2001. The success of this program in terms of performance, reliability, maintainability, and cost has resulted in fielding an additional four sites. The table below provides information about each fielded site.

Currently Fielded Sites
Location Date Fielded Number of
Simulators Number of
Channels
Davis Montham AFB, AZ Sept 2003 2 10
Osan AFB, Korea Aug 2003 1 5
Whiteman AFB, AR Aug 2002 1 5
Bradley AFB, CT June 2002 1 5
Spangdahlem AFB, Germany May 2002 1 5
Battlecreek AFB, MI April 2002 1 5
New Orleans, LA March 2002 1 9
Pope AFB, NC Feb 2002 1 5

MetaVR visual systems are delivered with government-furnished equipment (GFE) terrain databases that entail no cost or licensing fees. The 3D terrain databases are compatible with multiple customer applications of MetaVR technology.

Who maintains the simulators? Or is permament onsite support provided.

Their Permanent, and Networked. So that Units can Fly together in them. Basically a little micro Digital Battlefield Simulater.

So doyou think any of the old simulator cockpit will be for sale?

Mudd, they are not networked yet. And since we usually work in pairs, it will be a while before A-10s do any meaningful DMO. Maybe some FAC work here and there, but nothing more.

Certainly interesting as Much Money is Dumped into them, when I feel its cheaper to Burn the gas.

Friends at the 47th are loving the way they are using the PC Game lockon for a Joint FAC trainer with the GFACS (Not in teaching the flying, But the "Tactical side of employment and comms"

"RickUSN-

That was intelligent and useful Mudd.

But it certainly is what Ive come to expect.

Mindless babbling with no intent to either enlighten or inform.

I wonder how long these sims will be useful as PE is completed?

aren't the trainer schools using the T-37 addon for FS9?

A friend who helped in that is doing some of the same detail for F-15's and F-18s. They even developed software where 2 people can ride in one plane from 2 different areas. One pilot, one GIB.

They will be upgraded to PE standards.
