Hello, this is my first post. I will be leaving for AF basic training on July 19th, from there I will train to be an A-10 Flight Crew Cheif. I was wondering what my duties will be. If anyone is, has been or knows the duties of a flight crew chief I would love to know more. Thanks!

I think there may be a person or two on this board who can answer that. Just a wild guess...

d-roc, you are about to become the life line of the Air Force because without Crew Chiefs the planes just wouldn't get off the ground.

Job Specifics are as follows: you will be responsible for managing, directing, monitoring and documenting all maintenance actions on your assigned aircraft. You will perform inspections on the aircraft to ensure that it is air worthy, and will either repair or co-ordiante the repair of any discrepancies which will prevent the aircraft from completing it's mission in a safe manner.

hmmm, maybe a little to indepth. If so just think of it this way. We pretty much do the same thing as a certified auto mechanic except we do it on aircraft.

If you have anymore questions feel free to fire away there are several former/current crew chief's which post here and if there's one thing we enjoy doing its telling people about our job.

ROFL, well said D-roc! I've been off the "line" for a while so, with the "new" MRT program does a new airman go on day shift until his/her 5 level CDC's are complete? I remember in the "old days" we put them on swings to learn the aircraft better before putting them on days.

Dice, if they haven't changed it since I got out they still split them up some go to days and some go to nights. Just depends on their abilities. However, IMHO I've found that the best Crew Dawgs are the ones that are put on nights and learn maintenance first, Launch and Lounge second.

Hey d-roc,
If your reading comprehension is high enough, they might make you a Repair and Reclamation guy! Good Luck!

I remember when I came in in 88(man im getting old) they put me on swings. A guy that got there about a month later went to days. He won all kinds of things like mech of the quart. and runner up for the year. About a year after he got there he went to swings and we found out he didn't even know how to change atire or brakes. For some reason he got out soon after, I left

Now come on koobster, when I was on nights our day shifters could mow grass, pick up cigarette butts and paint with the best of them! And the commanders saw that! They didn't see who really turned the wrenches though.

I scored 95 on the ASVAB... what is Repair and Reclamation?

It's the same AFSC as a Crew Chief. It's a "heavy maintenance shop". Removing, replacing and maintaining landing gear, flight controls, cockpit enclosure systems (canopies and windshields), engine throttle controls, Crashed, Damaged and Disabled Aircraft Recovery (CDDAR) and aircraft wheel and tire back shop. It's a cool job. I've been doing it for 20 years and still learn something every day. You'll have to check into it when you get to your permanent assignment. The ASVAB score doesn't make much difference but your mechanical aptitude and work ethic do. The whole "reading comprehesion" remark was a little jab at my Crew Chief brothers. That is a very good job that is an honor to have!

and if you really pay attention and do a good job you can put in for DEPOT. It's even more involved. There you get to yank wings and really get into the guts of the plane. You also get to play with other people toys like sheet metal, & electricians.
