Retired 461/2W1 here, who supported A-10's at Davis-Monthan and Nellis.
At DM in the late 1970's we had both A-7D's and A-10's. Around 1979 we got the GFU-7/GFU-8 ALA setup for processing 30mm ammo. Before that we had to remove all the 30mm from the 588 round (back then) ammo cans and transfer it to the smaller M548 (20mm) cans, 36 rounds per. The loaders then loaded the aircraft from those smaller containers. Must have been a royal pain, and several of them threw their backs out in the process. There were also a few lost fingers in the ALA before some safety measures were added.
Around 1989 at Nellis we were testing the LASTE modification to the A-10. Aerojet (I think) made a special lot of TP-T for that program, and they fired it straight, without any TP/TPT mix ratio. Must have been quite a sight.
Is TP-T a stocklisted item these days? Used to be that the only thing use in training was the PGU-15 series TP round.
