Whilst enjoying the rare sight of Hogs flying in the UK today, we noted that some A-10 pairs took off singly (ie with an interval) and others performed pairs formation take-offs......just wondered what influences a decision to do a formation take-off or otherwise?

All about training and currency. When the weather is too low, the only option is to do a single-ship takeoff. Coming out of the winter in Germany, most of the pilots are out of formation takeoff/landing currency. They are updating while the weather is good.

If you have live weapons, you have to take off single ship. If the weather is too bad, you have to takeoff single ship. Otherwise, most of the rest of the time it is up to the flight lead.

Thanks for the reply inkjet, yesterdays conditions were'nt too bad at all......cloudbase 5000 feet-ish?
The currency thing certainly sounds apt in this case.
Former SP Hog drivers will be interested in the amount of good photos being posted on the UK aviation forums at this time, all good stuff.

Sorry Dutchy but even if this info can be forund on other websites we don't post it here because we hold ourselves up to a higher standard of security. I believe because it can be said, doesn't mean it should be...</b>

Dutchy, not a good thing to post tail numbers for flights.

They get a little touchy on that OPSEC ;-)

You can read those numbers on many sites. It is not really a secret.
But thanks for the warning, I do it never again.
