This might sound like a crazy type question, but what happens to the spent casings from the GUA 8 after the gun has been fired. Is it possible for the casing to be ejected from the drum or does it return back to the drum after the ordnance has been fired. There has been a lot of interest shown over the past few weeks with the arrival of the 81st on TDY to Lakenheath and one of the questions was about the 30mm shell. I was always under the impression that because the round is fed onto a linkless system that once fired the spent cartridge returned back to the drum and was removed once the aircraft was back on the ground.
best regards

You're correct. almost all of the US guns systems that I know of use linkless systems. A-10 is no exception.

To add on that, the casings are aluminum. I believe they are thrown into a recycling bin, and thrown away as scrap.

So is it safe to say that the spent shell cannot be dispensed from the aircraft as it fires. There has been some talk on the FC forum here in England that in the eighties that when the A-10 used the ranges over here that they could pick up the spent cartridge. Having been on a visit to Cowden range whilst the A-10's were based here I asked the question and was told that the only thing that was left on the range after a straffing pass was the dummy round.

Hi there

What was meant was that they could ( whatever floats there boat )
pick up the head of the 30mm round, and as described here the case stays
in the gun till RTB
