Anyone else notice that Willow Grove and W.K. Kellogg are both on the BRAC list? What does this mean for the Hogs stationed there if the bases are closed? |

It could mean almost anything. You'll also note that three other A-10 bases (Boise, Bradley and Baltimore) will undergo a "realignment". If the bases close, it may mean nothing more than moving the unit to another base; that'd be best case scenario. Worst case would be disbandment of the unit and redisbursment of the flying assets. The Guard hasn't been happy with number of UE (unit equipped) airframes since the number was reduced several years ago. Perhaps this is a way to plus-up other units. Same applies to the realignments. Both Boise and Baltimore have other airframes assigned and for some time now, there's been talk of combining Barnes and Bradley. However, Barnes is not mentioned which supposedly means "no change" but I wouldn't count on it. Until the DOD releases more details, there will be much speculation. About the only thing that's certain at this point is there will be changes in A-10 basing. Old Chief |

It's all good for the Hogs, in the big picture. Battle Creek moves to Selfridge. Willow Grove closes. NOLA closes. Eielson gives up their Hogs. Moody gets 48 Hogs... Everybody else gets bigger. More efficient for those remaining bases. Coach |

Is this meaning that Spangdahlem is saved? But that the numbers of A-10 now more or less in flying? Salute Dutchy Termites do it in the dark! (47FS Barksdale afb) |

On the brac site they have a detailed report. I went through and picked out A-10 pertinent info. Pretty Interesting. Seems the Guard and Reserve is the most affected in this. Deactivate the 111th Fighter Wing (Air National Guard) and relocate assigned A-10 aircraft to the 124th Wing (Air National Guard), Boise Air Terminal Air Guard Station, Boise, ID (three primary aircraft authorized); 175th Wing (Air National Guard), Martin State Airport Air Guard Station, Baltimore, MD, (three primary aircraft authorized); 127th Wing (Air National Guard), Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mount Clemens, MI (three primary aircraft authorized) and retired (six primary aircraft The 927th Air Refueling Wing (AFR) at Selfridge will distribute its eight KC-135 aircraft to the 127th Wing (ANG) at Selfridge. The 127th Wing will retire its 15 F-16 aircraft and eight C- 130E aircraft, and will convert to A-10 and KC-135R aircraft Realign Bradley International Airport Air Guard Station, CT. The A-10s assigned to the 103d Fighter Wing will be distributed to the 104th Fighter Wing, Barnes Municipal Airport Air Guard Station, MA (nine aircraft) and retirement (six aircraft). The wing’s expeditionary combat support (ECS) elements will remain in place at Bradley and Bradley will retain capability to support a Homeland Defense mission. Realign Barnes Air Guard Station, MA; Selfridge ANGB, MI; Shaw Air Force Base, SC; and Martin State Airport Air Guard Station, MD, by relocating base-level TF-34 engine intermediate maintenance to Bradley, establishing a Centralized Intermediate Repair Facility (CIRF) at Bradley for TF-34 engines. Realign Boise Air Terminal Air Guard Station (AGS), ID. Distribute the four C-130H aircraft of the 124th Wing (ANG) to the 153rd Airlift Wing (ANG), Cheyenne, WY. The new, larger unit at Cheyenne will create an active duty/ ANG association. Justification: Currently, Boise (66-SOF/CSAR, 66-airlift) operates a mix of C-130 and A-10 aircraft. These aircraft have very different missions. This recommendation realigns Boise tooperate only A-10s and distributes its C-130 aircraft to Cheyenne (118-airlift). Boise is a valuable A-10 base because of its proximity to air-to-ground ranges with scoreable strafing and bombing, threat emitters, and integrated air combat training. In turn, Cheyenne is robusted to a larger, more effective C-130 squadron size. Additionally, Cheyenne’s proximity to an active duty Air Force installation (F.E. Warren Air Force Base) allows it to host an active/ANG associate unit. Realign NAS New Orleans ARS, LA. Distribute the 926th Fighter Wing’s A-10 aircraft to the 442d Fighter Wing (AFR), Whiteman Air Force Base, MO (nine aircraft), and the 917th Wing (AFR) at Barksdale Air Force Base, LA (six aircraft). Close W.K. Kellogg Airport Air Guard Station, MI. Distribute the 110th Fighter Wing’s A-10s (15 aircraft) to the 127th Wing (ANG), Selfridge ANGB, MI. Realign Pope Air Force Base (Air Force Base), NC. Distribute the 43d Airlift Wing’s C-130E aircraft (25 aircraft) to the 314th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base, AR; realign the 23d Fighter Group’s A-10 aircraft (36 aircraft) to Moody Air Force Base, |

They aren't hogs, but it's BRAC topic: Lambert air guard jets moving to two other bases By Elisa Crouch and Tim O'Neil Of the Post-Dispatch 05/13/2005 Major Mike Jurries, a pilot of the 131st Fighter Wing, walks to his F-15 Eagle fighter at the Missouri Air National Guard at Lambert Field. ( Gabriel B. Tait /P-D) The fighter jets at Lambert Field would be sent to two other air stations under the Pentagon's plan to realign and close military bases, a St. Louis official confirmed today. The 131st Fighter Wing is not on the Pentagon's list of proposed closings. But Jeff Rainford, chief of staff to St. Louis said nine of the wing's 15 F-15 Eagles would go to Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas, Nev., and the other six would go to an Air National Guard unit at Atlantic City, N.J. Rainford said earlier information today was that all the jets would go to Nellis, a major base that provides advanced training for fighter pilots. Rainford said the updated information from the Pentagon says the nine headed to Nellis would join the "aggressor" units, which fly combat against the visiting air units during training, and the F-15s headed for New Jersey would join homeland security duties. The 131st now flies for the Missouri Air National Guard. A guard fighter unit has been a fixture at Lambert since 1923. "Duct tape is like the Force. 48 at Moody = 36 from Pope and 12 from Eielson. I wonder if the 70FS White Knights designation will reactivated at the 347th(Moody)? Kungfu |

Are you sure about the 48, shouldn't it be 51? Realign Eileson, 12 Aircraft and to backup inventory (three aircraft)to Moody. (JACKB Don't sell that ATV there's plenty of places to use it down here) Realign 23rd Fighter Group's A-10 aircraft (36) to Moody. kungfu - I'll have to agree what JBPig said in the other thread, I think they'll be wearing teeth at Moody. I guess my math is a little off Lil Hitler, I imagine that the 48 jets would only make two 24 PA squadrons. The 3 extra usually aren't part of your PA. As a former prisoner of Valdumster, from the 69th, it still would be cool to see White Knights make a reappearence. Probably not too likely with the 68th and 69th deactivated and transerring the 74th and 75th from Pope. We kept our receipt when we accepted 79-0216, we would be more than happy to return it to Moody. The next math question would be how many air frames are going to be retired? Kungfu |

I knew this thread would be created/busy before I even read the report, what witht he whole time zone/shift difference between me and most others on the forum. It took about 30 seconds after the first person opened the BRAC report this morning before rumors were everywhere. One me and another CC wanted to start, but for some reason I don't know we decided against it, was to tell everyone that our upcoming rotation back to the desert this winter was cancelled and we were just going to be packing up the whole squadron and moving to Moody. Alot of the old timers in the flight are already looking in their mailboxes for an assignment to Moody. Looks like the Gaurd/Reserve is most affected, alot more than AD anyway. Only 2 AD bases proposed closing. I wouldn't mind going to Idaho, or even Moody for that matter, and still be able to stay on the Hog. This will definitely be intersting, no matter what happens, and I'm glad I'm around for it. Then, when I'm an old man Like Hitler (if he doesnt kill me first for continuing these old age jokes), I'll be talking to some young airmen about all thse old bases that dont exist anymore. Makes me even more glad I was at Pope since the 23rd may not be there much longer. Same for here at Eielson, and just like at Al Jaber. Sorry to hear about Eielson. That was a great flying assignment. 300 mile LATN's without crossing a road. Moose Creek and North Pole will be devastated. Fairbanks still has Wainwright but will lose nearly 9% of its employment force when PAEI closes. As I read the report I assume Cope T would stay open (at least during the warm season) but it didn't say that. On the other hand, my in-laws live in central GA making a return to the Hawg to Moody a nice proposition. We have some Battle Creek students crapping their pants thinking they're out of jobs. Looks like they just move up the way to Selfridge... ATTACK!!!!!!! |

I imagine the Wiper pilots will be looking for jobs, and I'm pretty sure that they won't be lining up at the ARW's door to fly -135s. Although I'm sure they'll still have jobs, hiring's going to be pretty tight over the next few years in the Hog Guard community, and the Guard community overall. |

Surely they'll keep the 23rd numberplate alive when they move to Moody, no disrespect but the '347th' hasnt the same history, lineage call it what you will.......The 23rd FG are legendary. |

I don't see the 23rd deactivating only moving to Moody like they did from Alex, to much histroy there. The face of the A-10 community is surely going to change in the next few years, that's for sure. Ugly But Well Hung |

With the C-130s 'realigning' to LR and the Hogs to Moody, what does that leave at Pope? besides transient jets and the Army? |

Sorry Dice but unit history is meaningless in this round. The 103rd/118th has a huge history, including Burma and the Flying Tigers (the 23rd FG). They also have done great things with the Hog..unfortunately that falls under the category of "what have you done for me lately". This round, if it goes as planned, will give Connecticut the unenviable status of being the only state in the country without a flying unit but with all efforts being focused on trying to save the sub base, I doubt that will make much difference.
