Is it true that the A-10 can only kill Russian tanks if it attacks the thinnest armor on the top? Granted, the A-10 does have a 30mm cannon. But U.S. Abhrams tanks were upgunned from 105mm to 122mm just so that they would have a chance of penetrating Russian tank armor.

Are there any documented cases of the 30mm gau-8 actually destroying a heavy main battle tank?

Don't know if T-55/72s were specifically killed by 30mm in Desert Storm, but I have no doubt that the 30mm can do the job.

I found some data on the Gau-8. Heres the armor penetration capabilities:

69mm at 500 meters
38mm at 1000 meters

Heres the only information I could find on the T-72s armor thickness:

"The turret has conventional cast armor with a maximum thickness of 280-mm, the nose is about 80-mm thick and the glacis is 200-mm thick laminate armor."

Maybe this will help...

Also remember there is two types of kills, battlefield and total, just food for thought.

There are three types of kills...

Firepower (F-kill), mobility (M-kill) and catastrophic (K-kill).

Each means a different set of parameters when determining effectiveness of a particular weapons system.

Look at the Tank grave yards in the desert over in the SANDBOX, awful lot of T-72'S WITH 30MM DAMAGE,

I dont think there's any doubt that a HOG can Kill anything that roams the battle field.

If anyone wants to say the "30mm" cant take out any main battle tank,I dare them to sit inside and let a HOG take target pratice on it.

I think that was a Maverick accidentlally shot at a Bradley, which is not a comparable encounter.

Desert Storm, there were two friendly fire incidents involving the A-10. One was a USMC LAV-25 of the 1st LAR Batallion that was hit by a malfunctioning Maverick on 29 Jan 91 with 7 Marines KIA, and the other incident was where 9 Brit soldiers were killed when three British Army Warrior APCs of the 1st Batallion, The Staffordshire Regiment, were hit by Maverick missiles targeted against them by A-10s.

Pic of the destroyed LAV-25:

Tragically, in the start of OIF, A-10s and the British again played a part in blue-on-blue when two Scimitar APCs of D Squadron, Blues and Royals, Household Cav Regiment were hit by repeated 30mm fire and 5 Brit soldiers killed. Investigation pending last I heard.

Also in OIF, A-10s and Marines also came together again when 18 Marines were killed and 17 wounded after A-10s strafed a Marine position near An Nasariya. Investigation later revealed communication, identification, and other problems in the 23 March incident.

From the website, I see that A-10 pilots were encouraged to shoot the engines of enemy tanks. So that would be a mobility kill.

Depends. If a fire starts(which is pretty likely), it could result in a total vehicle loss.

Or if the tank caught fire, at the very least the air conditioning would become ineffective. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
