What is the black box located over the drivers left arm behind ejection seat? Is that some sort of comunication device?

Thanks and very funny. Hey, I have another question. Back in the 80's, there was a pannel removed on the right lower consol. (under driver's right arm). A photo I saw in 2000 had a the aircrafts unit number and red stripes painted on it. What is usualy painted there?
