I’m writing about the engine change where we lost “Van”, and how we used the "V" on our ladder door, and have a few questions.

1. First what was Van’s full name?

2. As I remember it happen about ½ through our 1996 rotation, was this the winter or summer rotation?

3. How many children did van have?

4. Who was our squadron commander?

I may have more later...

Dice, I got there just before that deployment. The jets deployed on Sept 9 (I remember working on my birthday). I believe the CC was LtCol Condon. The rest of the 70th guys should remember the other answers. BTW, the PE Patch mural is done, I'll have to snap a pic and post it.

Dice,

Here's what I can remember,

1. I believe Vans first name was Cal, not sure if it was short for somthing else, last name Vandenberg (sp) same as the base in Cali. (tried to verify by our deployment orders however I was on ESTA and I belive he went over main body)

2. Deployment was Sept - Dec 96 I left out on ESTA and we departed on 12 Sept 96 and arrived back home on 22 Dec 96 (Verified by travel voucher)

3. CC - Could have been Condon but but I believe it was Rolfs, reason I say that is I have paper work showing he was with the squadron during the previous deployment ( 15 Dec 95 - 15 Mar 96). Then we turned around and deployed again in Sept.

That's about all I can do for now.

I'm pretty sure it was Condon on that deployment, if I remember correctly Col. Rolfs left soon after we got back from our first trip.

Vans 1st name was Tom (Thomas) I believe he had only 1 daughter if memory serves me right, as for the sq cc....cant remember. I was the fall rotation cause it was the same rotation that mary-alyce got real sick and we almost lost her as well.

That trip just sucked all around...between Van, Mary-Alyce...the brought the 117s over...then moved in the army....the TCNs tossing around grenades they found in the sand...the Scud launch, remember Al Stanton running in out tent yelling at us to get in the bunkers...crazy trip...

Here's a funny memory--wonder if any of you ex-70th guys remember: There was a TDY down to Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico and if my memory serves me correctly, 80-0276 had a cute little incident on the runway, i.e. landing with the friggin' gear up! Sure, it was deemed airworthy again after replacing the rudder caps, training Mavs, and a VHF comm antenna or two, but that thing had fuel leaks for months to follow! One distinct memory was on our last trip to AJ, where someone had a great idea to capture the nostalgic moment of our final trip as a squadron and have the assigned Pilot, DCC and ACC stand in front of their respective jets for a photo. Not a bad idea. However, when Adam Okkelberg got his pictures back, (he was the DCC on -0276,) he and the pilot were about 50 feet from "their" airplane, as it was in the Fuel pit with a few guys in white Tyvek suits crawling all over it fixing fuel cells! I still get a kick out of that one. By the way--anyone been to AJ lately? I wonder if the wooden walkway between the compound and the flight line that we built in '98 is still there.

Cheers!

Chad

Chad,

The wooden walkway is still (or was during OIF), however it was pretty overgrown with weeds and in poor shape, didn't look as though it had been used for some time.

Mugs/PK

I think you both are correct about Condon being the CC, this was the last trip I made as a member of the 70 and went to QA not long after we returned.

Yeah, Hitler, It was in fine shape when we were there for OSW/OEF in 2002. How much could it have deteriorated in the 6 months between when we left then and when you went back for OIF?

Never said it wasn't usable, it just looked that way... had several loose boards and holes along the way. Made it a real problem while walking the path at night..

During OIF it was actualy out of the way because they closed the walking access to the compound and you had to use the "new" (for those of you who remember the old) main entrance to the compound.

Jack this photo was on the disk you sent me...

It rained really hard around christmas of 2002 and that area flooded pretty good! The walk-way was floating and shifting. We still tried to walk it and a lot of boards came loose. When it dried out it was in pretty bad shape! It was still useable just showing a lot of wear.
