Which branch (army, air force, navy, marines) will give me the greatest probability of getting a pilot slot? Thanks!

I think you should try the Polish Undergorund Balloon Corps. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Early 1980's I was a Marine Reservist in NROTC, I was locked into a guaranteed Aviation Slot in the Corps. To make matters worse the Secretary of the Navy froze all Marine Aviation programs for restructuring. I was not a happy camper. I had to do some serious soul searching on what my priorities or goal expectations should be. I wanted to fly Helos. Since the NROTC could no longer guarantee its commitment to me I left the NROTC as a Commisioning source and completed my last year of College. I applied for a USAF Commision with an opportunity for USAF Flight Training. Upon Graduating OCS I attended UPT. I dream Sheeted for Helicopters and ended up in a OV10 and Later in my Career Fighters. 10 Years into my Career I took a gamble.. Testpilot School or Leave the service. Fortunately I had doen well enough in my career to beat out the other 2500 Applicants and spent another 8 Years in that line of work.

All the serices offer a Flight Program. I would look at yourself and see if you have what it takes to be competitive for each prospective service and what career capabilities they provide. The NAvy and MArine Corps have the smallest aviation fleet for a Military Organisation. The career tracks are narrow and very competitive. I had the opportunity 12 years into my Career to Fly with a Marine F/A-18-D(AW) squadron for 2 years. During this period of time My eyes were opened to how severly lacking that service is into Career investment and time accrued as an Aviator. Most officers I met had only flew for a maximum of 6 Years and will spend the rest of their career flying a desk. As compared to a USAF officer spending nearly Double or more as an aviator.

THe USAF will invest a great dealinto your Quality of life and Career goals.

The Us Army has warrant Officer Flight training , where their focus is into a Technical Specialist and not a Commanding leader or administrator. They also have a High School to flight program that allows non College degreed individuals to be aviators.

I would look into firast of all if you wish to be a Aviator, a Leader or Both. Then i would focus on what requirements are needed to eachservice and if you as an individual can be competitive and productive in that career. outside of the Flying career I would also look into what the service can provide you in exposure and training that benefits your Education so that you will become competitive in the Civillian job market at the end of your prospective Military Career.

The USAF provide exposure for me to insure a quality of life for my family, a wide spectrum of aviation exposure and career opportunities that supported my Degree (Aerospace Engineering).

I was a MArine that Chose to be a pilot first and to insure that I would have a Investment that was competitive in the civillian marketplace. Be loyal to yourself and to the current assignment and you will be happy. Even a guy like me that never had an opportunity to fly helicopters in the service.
