I am a college student closing out my final semesters in college. I would like to go on to grad school but first I wish to enlist. I have seen the A-10 inaction at air shows and online videos…it is an amazing machine and I am interested in flying one. I know the air-force has a couple squadrons and so does the army, but I am still unsure of which branch I wish to go into. I would like some advice on how I can go about becoming an a-10 pilot. Thanks dan |

First welcome to the board! The choice will be easy for you, as the Army does not fly the A-10, only the active duty AF, Air National Guard and the AF Reserve. <img src="http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/457/bgnrjsiiw81q1gc.jpg" border=0> Gravity....its not just a good idea, its the law. |

68stang, go to the Airforce. They fly (if I have it correct) till 2028 with the Warthog. And welcome here, hopely you have here a great time with us. Salute Dutchy Termites do it in the dark! (47FS Barksdale afb) |

If you're dead set on the A-10, then applying to a guard or reserve unit that flies the A-10 would be your best bet. You've got a very competitive road ahead of you, but getting your degree is a good place to start. Good Luck! |

Call me a skeptic, but I have a problem with a guy's motivation when he says he really wants to fly an A-10 and knows the Air Force has a few squadrons as well as the Army. Doing your homework is a novel concept. Try http://www.goarmy.com Coach |

UPT is full of guys who were smart enough to get a slot but had no idea what they were getting themselves into. You'd think that with a ten year committment that guys would have done enough research to have heard and interpret terms such as B.U.F.F. or to have a basic understanding of Air Force tailcodes, etc. It's just a matter of time before the AF is full of guys like this. |

I know I haven't posted much here, but I read most of the topics weekly. I have to agree with Coach. I can see it right now. If he actually did get an A-10 flight slot, he'd be the guy that leaves his piddle pack in the map case after every flight. |

Well since the topic has been hijacked I will add my two pence. The AF just a couple of years ago was paying crewdogs a multiplier of 5 on re-enlistments and commissioning damn near any joker with a 4-yr degree. Even to the point they were approving waviers for age. Hell we got an 2Lt that had been a MSgt with 18yrs in service. I say WTF. Anyway fastforward to last year and the same crewdogs that got the 50,000 to 60,000 for re-enlisting are now being told we dont need you. So thousands of enlisted troops that were counting on the AF for a career were told no CJR and see you later. Now this year the officer corps (class of 2002, 2003) are being looked at for discharge. The AF can never seem to bring the pendulum to the center. It is always to far one way or the other. Maybe so day but not today.
