SO what do you gentlemen think of the Eurofighter in terms of avionics and exportability instead of weapon systems?

Post subject:

avionics are ok, but it's exportability is questionable since Greece is the only taker so far.

Hey M21 Sniper, what was the source of the 5 year deferral rumor? That would make my day.

I think he meant Greece.

Anyways the EF-2000 should be a great plane in thoery when it is fully in service. On paper it should outclass all Russian planes that are really coming into service.

I like its weapons configartions.

I like the Euro/Phoon too troung, seems like a good mix of abilities, it's just a generation behind JSF and F-22.

Still put my vote on the Grippen. I think Hungary made a great choice. I understand R&D and all that but how much longer untill the Euro/Phoon actually goes operational ?

Hey, Hog166. Your avatar is from the "Tophatters" tail insignia is it not? Apparently there is another "mixed marriage" member on the forum. I worked on the A-10 during design/production on Long Island while my spouse worked the F-14 across town. I ended up at Grumman myself when Republic bellied-up. Well, I guess you have a history with the F-14 too. I will have to pay attention to your posts for some education and nostalgia.

I thought it was from the "hat in the ring" squadron from WWI.

Nope Flyboy...That represents VF-14, which is the oldest continuosly active squadron in the Navy. Being a Tomcat squardon was appropriate cause the original mascot of VF-14 way back in the days was a grinning Tomcat wearing a Tophat. That squadron has a pretty colorfull history as Hawg can probably tell you, participating in Urgent Furry (Invasion of Grenada) as well as dropping bombs over Bosnia, and a buch of stuff before, after, and between all that.

Yeah you are both correct. The Navies first fighter squadron VF-1 was the Tophatters circa September 1919. it was the Air detachment from PacFlt on North Island in California. They Flew HD1 fighters, Martin Torpedo bombers, Neuiports,Curtis Jennys and Morse Trainers. I do not know the origin of 'The Hat In The Ring Squadron' of Rickenbacker fame in regards to timeframe. However I know that because of WWI the AAF unit must be slightly older. Both units however are the oldest active fighter squadrons in regards to their particular services. On the Navy side their was also VF2 and VF3 respectively. One of which is still The World Famous Red Rippers (currently VF11) and the other The World Famous Tomcatters (currently VF31)
Just out of trivia and nostalgia as you said, it was in fact VF14 on May 10, 1966 ( Ltjg Bill Wood JAFO and Ltjg Greg Schwalbert stick actuator) that succesfully flew an F4 A/C #112 from the catapult of the USS Roosevelt with its wings folded and landed succesfully on shore with it.

Well Chad you are almost right. Between 5 december 1921 and 4 May 1922 Combat Squadron 4 was temporarily deactivated. ost records say 'some elements' of the unit possibly remained on active duty rolls. However i have not been able to find what the elements were. This is a sticking point. In the Navy there is huge rivalry between VF11 (The Red Rippers)and VF14 because of this slight deactivation time. VF11 claims that they are the oldest continuously commisioned fighter squadron in the Navy while VF14 claims they are. If you are NAVAIR you know what I am talking about when I say that there is as much rivalry between Fitron units as there is animosity between MATRON and FITRON. NAVAIR is a weird animal..........but I still love it. OH HOW I DIGRESS SOMETIMES !
