There is a series currently running on UK Channel 4 called the “Ten Greatest Ever…” They’ve covered bikes and trains etc, but two nights ago did the “Ten Greatest Ever Fighters” They came up with 10. F117 9. Foker DR1 Tri-plane 8. Mitsubishi Zero A6M 7. Harrier GR3 6. F86 Saber 5. Meschersmit ME190 4. F18 Super Hornet 3. MIG 21 2. Spitfire 1. ??? Anybody got any opinions of the list so far and any guesses as to what got the No. 1 spot? BTW, direct any hate mail to Channel 4, not me… "I can just punch holes in paper for sooo long before I want to see something blow up/fall down " - Boomer 5th May 2005 |

Well, the french haven't done anything since the Nieuport, so hopefully we can rule them out. "Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together...." - Carl Zwanzig |

The programme makers admitted that it was a bomber. But that it was a bomber that flew like a fighter. And because none of the top pilots wanted to fly a B designation, the only way to attract them to the fleet was to assign it an F designation... Keep guessing folks... It's almost definitely the P-51, but the F-15 and F6F are also strong candidates. There's NO WAY you can make a top ten list without the F-15, F6F and P-51 that's worth a damn. Considering they only have one open slot remaining......it ought to tell you what i think of their list. LOL There are two kinds of soldiers. As usual everybody (with the exception of 30MM) has had something worthwhile to contribute. I'll post the No. 1 Fighter before I get some shut eye. Will it be a Lawn Dart..? You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |

F-117 at #10 is bs, while it's classified as a fighter we all know that was a political rating capche-capche da - we go forward together Faugh ah Ballaugh -Clear The Way- |

Everybody who went for the P-51, give yourselves a pat on the back. It was placed as the No. 1 fighter of all time. An awesome airframe linked to an awesome engine... I had no idea it ran with a Merlin up front. A quote I found on the web... The P51 Mustang had an astonishing success rate. Its ratio for kills to losses was said to have been 19 kills for every 1 Mustang lost. The P51 Mustang is credited with the destruction of 4,950 German planes – more than any other Allied fighter – and some of these kills included the jet powered Me 262. You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |

Sorry, Fighters. Okay I try it again. Maybe the Hurricane, made in England. But I read it could also be used as bomber and we are here by the A-10 site/forums. So I think the good old P-47 Thunderbolt. He was made as fighter, later in WW2 used as a bomber/attack against trains etc. Salute Dutchy Termites do it in the dark! (47FS Barksdale afb) |

Yes, 44, I was being a smarta$$. But then, the P-51 was pretty much a forgone conclusion, IMHO. The original Allison engine was basically worthless for anything other than ground attack work. Mating the Merlin with the airframe di the trick. Wasn't it the same Allison that they put into the P-39? "Duct tape is like the Force. Well let's face it, you know about planes so you've got right to behave however you see fit when dealing with a land lubber ... I think you have a point, the programme was very 'popularist' so this might explain why such an obvious choice like the P51 was made. From a purely jingo-istic PoV I would have voted for the Hurricane as it actually shot down more planes than the Spitfire. But I guess it just wasn't glamourous enough... You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |
