This doesn't have to be based on anything more than you liking the plane, but what's your favourite WWII plane. I'd like to kick off with the De Havilland DH. 98 Mosquito A Twin-engine light bomber, photo-reconnaissance, night fighter, fighter-bomber, anti-shipping strike fighter, transport, long-range escort fighter, pathfinder, intruder, etc. And with two Merlins and a wooden frame it had speed, about 400mph worth. As a plane it pretty much had it all including a pretty cool film with the best theme music of any WWII film. http://www.elite.net/~gurpal/movie/633sqdrn.mid You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |

I agree with Booms...The P-40 rocked...It was tough, fast, and durable...It did very well in North Africa. I never could figure out why it was "out classed" by the ME-109 or Zero. It had attributes which made it more than a match plus was avaliable in 1940. |

P-47, for survivability (the bottom line in a personal war!) P-38 for unique styling and varied mission and centered fire-power. "Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together...." - Carl Zwanzig |

The P-38 is certainly a very nice looking plane. The P-47 looks like a brute, all engine... Is it the P-47 that appears in all the film about the Pacific theatre? I'm kinda drawn to the Mozzie because nobody wanted it and when they got it they weren't sure what to do with it. So they got it to do everything... You're born, you keep your head down and you die. 44hp: China and Africa was the P-40; Pacific was P-38 (P-47N & M late in the war) and Corsair for AAF and Marines, Wildcats and Hellcats for the Navy; Europe was -38, -47 and -51. Generally speaking, of course. Then there were the bombers... "Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together...." - Carl Zwanzig |

The G-1 was designed for one purpose only, to kill tanks (in a way, along with the Il-2 Stormavik, the ancestor of the A-10 Warthog). To accomplish this mission, the Gustav was equipped with two 37mm Flak 18 cannons. The G-1, and later the G-2 (converted from the long wingspan D-5)proved to be highly successful in "tankbusting", soon earning nicknames like 'Kanonenvogel' (Cannonbird) and 'Panzerknacker' (tank cracker). Most Gustavs were used on the Eastern front but could be found on the Western front as well by the end of the war." "Did you know? The Hurricane had 40mms on it too. That plane did just about everything. People remember it's successors, the Typhoon and whatever the other was called. But it kicked butt. eight .303s before anyone else thought of putting more than four guns on a plane. "Some pup" Nickname by Fenderstrat72 |

And here's a picture of the Mozzie, Not quite as sexy as some of the planes posted, but look at the size of those twin Merlins. And on a wooden plane. Apparantly they used to pull loops straight off the airfield they had so much power. You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |

P-61 was a dedicated night fighter that came out towards the end of WWII, had a primative but real honest to goodness air to air RADAR in the nose. A 9mm MAY expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink! |

Favorite WWII bird has to be the P-38. Firepower at the nose was the GAU-8 of the time. |

Maj. Bong sure made good use of that firepower THAT'S for sure. A 9mm MAY expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink! |

At leaste one version had the 37mm, 2 20mm, and 2 50cal ! A "party mix" of probly unparralelled proportions and no "timing gear" to get in the way of any of it. So how did they come up with that configuration? Was it a case of... "What have we got lying about the shop?" "Lots of big guns." "OK lets fit them all" "Sounds like a plan" You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |
