Thanks, Coach. I was pretty sure it didn't do much except to make it easier to recover from a compressor stall (assuming the stalled engine achieved a light-off within the "plus one second" of the chopped tone). I've been out of the Hawg for 14 months but that stat still stuck in my skull.

The CD player idea is a good one. Perhaps they should just issue patch cords for those long deployments across the pond...

Cheers...

Never heard anything about Aerospace Design courses at any high school I've ever heard of :)

Yes, this is a college course.

lol, just making sure. The reason I ask is because I am curious about the field. I assume it's aerospace engineering?.

I would really appreciate it if you could just tell me what field it is, what school you are going to, and any other handy dandy advise that you may have :P

P.S. I don't mean to hijack your thread, it's just that the subject has been driving me crazy lately and I am now in my Junior year of H.S. so I have to start making decicions soon.

Thx in advance!

The only other thing I could think of wold be to start making some of the parts again. Correct me please, but I've been told that alot of the stuff we use comes from the graveyard and storage from the seventies. I find it somewhat hard to believe. This would be fixed, though, if they started makign the frames again, so that would probably be a moot point.

You think that A-10 parts are old? Some of the parts used on the aircraft still come in containers marked for the A-7!

I'm curious where you came up with the mission requirements of 600 kts and smaller payload, and why you feel these address shortcomings of the current aircraft. Specifically, what shortcoming does the A-10 have that making it go faster will address? Similarly, what is the shortcoming that reducing payload will address?

My only beef with everthing they're trying to plug into/hang off the Hog is that it seems everyone's wanting to turn the thing into a "slow F-16", or worse yet, anyone remember the A-16 of the early '90s?. Having the night capes is great, but I'm not so sure we should stray too far from what the Hog was initially designed for: the simple, low-tech option. We have our LGB and JDAM droppers already. Lightening is great, but has bought us one more mission for the Army: ISR. Somewhat like a manned-Predator. I only wonder if by going so high tech with this jet, we'll be eroding the "back to basics". How many guys can still drop in HARS or STBY pipper with good confidence? And if not, what's going to happen when the green stuff goes away in the HUD in combat? RTB?

My $0.02.

I can't speak for every pilot, but I (and whoever happens to be in my flight) practice HARS and Standby pipper at least once or twice a month. And I don't see the enhancements as being a bad things at all. I don't remember how many hours I spent flying over Iraq (usually at night) not being able to do a damn thing because we couldn't PID a target.

Since I have no control over what happens to the jet as far as enhancements go, I just do my best to integrate the new systems into my current skill set. I'm not going to change how I employ the weapon, but I can now add new techniques to it.

I keep up on the HARS/STBY too, but I see too many guys that go out and only drop Top Gun events, most of which rarely include the above.

Yeah. Doing that now at night. Sure it's a pain and the pod would help with PID, but we're on the bottom of the drop chain anyhow here. I've had a number of times where I had good PID on a target they wanted hit, but the highers wanted the Strikes or Vipers to hit it. On the downside, Who knows if we'll be back, last the SECAF told us it was no, but I still leave that up in the air.

We'll all roll with the upgrades and incoporate them into the tactics. But I hope we don't morph into the archtypical "jack of all trades, master of none" with more and more missions being heaped upon us.
