What versions of the ESCAPAC ejection seat were used in the early A-10's, and which A-10's used them and for how long? Did the two-seat N/AWS aircraft use them, and was it eventually updated with ACES II's?

Dammit, Snipe, you are not talking your way out of this one; the kids caught you fair and square, so grant them their three wishes and hand over your pot of gold!

I beleive they went through the change in the early 80's I dont think any 90's A10's had them. Curious if their is any in the bone yard with them. UPCO had won the USAF bid to replace several fighters Egress seats in the early 80's after deriving the Several designs in the late 70's. Airforce wanted Commonality.

This one has M&M all over it.

LOL......When I got to the A-10 in 1978 the jets at D-M had the ESCAPAC 9 seat, sometime in 1979ish they did a TCTO on base for all our jets to put the ACES II in. These would have been done on our 75-77 models(mine was a 1976 model year). The 78's and above all came from the factory with the ACES II installed already. The NAWS was originally a 1973 single seater and as such would have have had the ESCAPAC seat installed. The pictures I have seen of it as a 2 seater had the ACES II installed.

Since we're talking trivia, I've got a question I've never gotten the answer to:

Post Desert Storm, when the Hog wings at Alex and the Beach were being decommissioned, was it a conscious decision to retire the 75-77 models, leaving the 78-82s we have now? Or did it just happen to work out that way? Reason I ask, is most all of the boneyard jets seem to be 75-77 models. I'd heard from one of my crew chiefs that the 75-77s differed slightly from the later models, but he never elaborated on how.

Anyone?

Even after 5 years of flying the jet, I never got the answer to that.

Yes it was a conscious effort to keep the "newer" aircraft in service. The only way I know of they were different was the thick V thin wings issue. All the 75-77s where thin wings but as you know so were most of the 78-79. I will look into this a little more but I believe the wing and number of aircraft staying in service were the driving factors.

Dice, the closest thing to a block change happened with 78-0582. There weren't a lot of changes, mostly with the avionics (ALR-46A versus ALR-69)and the seat. All of the 78 models had thin skin wings..if my somewhat questionable memory serves me, the thick skins started at 79-016 something.

582 went directly to Edwards for testing of the new ECM, 583 thru 586 were delivered from Hagerstown to the 103rd at Bradley. The deliveries were supposed to be 2 to the 103rd, 2 to the 104th but Barnes hadn't completed their enviornmental study so all 4 went to Bradley..2 were later transfered to Barnes. I believe Barnes still has 583 which holds the distinction of being the first ever A-10 delivered to the Air National Guard. 585 was attrited in a rather stupid move by the stick actuator proving once again that the dash 1 was correct.

Probably a whole bunch more than you wanted to know.

Old Chief, always like to hear about the Hawg and it's history! The retirement was based on year date and airframe hours, left the newest ones they could in service.
