Hang in there Matt. You are dealing with bureaucratic red tape. I know 4 months is an awful long time to wait for a claim. Just hang on a little longer.

Matt...

You went through one hell of a crisis. Being that I wasn't there, and being that I have no idea of the magnitude of the whole situation is, The word crisis is probably a bit of an understatement. That being said, we are fortunate we live in a country where our federal government is willing to aid our own in times like these. People that live in Thailand, or Indonessia and experienced the tsunami are seing no such quarter from their governing body. I know your frustrated, but atleast our governement is putting forth the effort to help our disaster victims. It may not be streamlined, it may not be efficient, but it's there. It seems there is way to much bad press out there slamming our relief efforts, and maybe some of it is warrented. But I do not believe there is a "textbook manor" in which to deal with a natural disaster. I hope things work out for you and your family Matt. Here is hoping 2006 treats you better.

..I'm Proud of ya chad. Few people seem to grasp the big picture. And how fortunate we are to have the govt we have, and the ability to make it get better.

...Keep your head up Matt.

hey I am greatful for help but Chad understand. That the army corp of engineers flooded my home by violating their own policies multiple times in both construction and annual inspection proceedures. I can take hurricane what has destroyed the lives our family and others is people who cut corners and did not do their job. Was watching a TV commercial the other day with a lawyer claiming to get 500,000 for a single neglegent car accident. Yet I can not sue for damages caused by government employees. THIS WAS NOT a natural disaster the city did not flood until the day after KATRINA. On top of it NOAA now says Katrina was a cat 2 when it hit our city our levees were cat 3 per Army Corps.

In my home town of St. Charles parish which barely got hit atleast 6 people I know by name have committed sucide. In new orleans the sucide rate is twice the national average. Quite frankly it is my daughter who keeps me going. You talk to FEMA they are rude and can tell you nothing. At best i will get a 26,000 grant for the destruction of our home, my business, force relocation, car replacement etc. I will never be made whole from the flood damage caused by the Failed levees.

Chad my family has not recourse but to count on a FEMA settlement. The only people who might be made whole are the people who got oil on their property when a refinery released oil into the flood water.

I am not a sue happy person but I am finding it hard to see the silver lining. my wife is depressed, we are loosing our health insurance ( I am a diabetic), My wifes hours are being cut at work, we can not get child care assistance so I can study and take classes for my paramedic recert, we have spent almost 11,000 in the last four month in unexpected expenditures.

I am just pissed. I can deal with Katrina the storm. It is the flooding caused by incompetance that has destroyed our lives.

Well hang in there buddy...My brother and sister in law live in Houston and all I have really heard about katrina, Rita etc...ground zero is what they tell me. (they both went and did volunteer work in New Orleans & Mississippi). I just read the the news about the tsunami victims, and the Pakistan earthquake victims that are happy for a bushel of wheat, let alone government assistance. I lived in Washington State when Mt. St. Helens errupted, the repurcussions of which was a diasaster for my father who was a farmer.

He lost a complete alfalfa crop which was our only cash crop at the time because U&I Sugar went bankrupt and his farming operation was geared towards producing sugar beets, that were now worthless and couldn't even be used for cattle feed (despite his sugar contracts. A double wammy...There was no such thing as crop insurance in the early 1980's. I guess my point is our great country has seen tragedy before, and if tragedy finds me and my family, I thank god that I am an American, and have the rights of an American citizen.

Hope it all works out for you Matt...

Chad our country is great. But you have to understand this was not a natural disaster in recent weeks it has come out that levees were not properly inspected. At times binoculars were used to inspect. Contractors dredged with no oversite. The army admitted that the leveess were not maintained per their standards.

Worst off now that the storm has passed the army is following elaborate check sheets to remove debris requirin asbestos inspection etc.

This is what pisses me off...

If people short-changing or ignoring procedures and check lists either cause or contribute to disasters (e.g. levee inspection, ATC operator working time directives or train track inspections) nobody seems to be held to account.

But when you want the rules to be broken or bent to tidy up the mess quicker (e.g. waiving permits for transporting heavy equipment or HSE geeks making the rescuers leave site 'cos they get a splinter or blister even though they want to keep working) the officials get all anally retentive over the same procedures they were ignoring earlier <img src=newicons/anim_furious.gif border=0 align=middle>...

Sorry, rant over - Keep your chin up Matt, things will eventually turn a corner...

You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky...

things turned corner big time last night got first grant so wife and I can pay the bills, feed the kid, and other things. Grant was less than max but I am greatful it gives us a fighting chance.

Hollowpoint you missed the best one they have some medics from Ohio who are claiming FEMA made them watch a sexual harassment video before they we tasked with handing out fliers. They had the sense to just go home.
