Cnn Showing a live video of a Apache Longbow that was abandoned 50nm South of Baghdad. With Iraqi Soldiers around it. No word yet if the Pilots had been safely extracted. 2 helmets displayed on the ground. Looks like the aircraft safely landed. A few hellfire AGM-114 missiles on the Left Racks.

Aircraft did not show any signs of damage.

Reporter that was with an apache element was not sure if all aircrews had made it back. He did say that some of the helo's returning had as much as 50 or more holes in them...

supposedly 30 attack helos in that group, hopefully the crew caught a ride somehow. I woulda pulled a "Slim Pickins" on the tail boom if I had to, but they may have gotten sepperated on egres or something.

It was 50 Apache's, as i heard this morning, and the two pilots are MIA.

One can only wonder how many Russian and Chinese technicians are crawling all over that aircraft this morning.

Apparently Apache pilots aren't issued thermite grendades?

Pretty amazing...

they need to plaster the whole area with CBU... maybe have a few of the delayed time bomblets in there

1. Don't look conspicuous; it draws fire.
2. Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you.

I can't BELIEVE that the USAF didn't blow that Apache to pices after it was set down.

Must have been a fear that the pilots were still in the vicinity...

from the AP for whatever THAT's worth :

A U.S. Central Command official in Qatar said the Apache shown on Iraqi television was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and was forced down late Sunday by heavy ground fire.

Another Apache and a UH-160 tried to rescue the crew, but were driven off by ground fire, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Wayne beat me to the punch.
Watching H&C too?

It's normal protocol to destroy a downed aircraft.
The reason it took so long was because of the bad weather conditions.

------------

The target area had been prepped by arty and air. I have read anywhere from 32-40 Apaches involved. Everyone took hits except maybe one. Pilots were reporting taking fire from all quadrants. It was your basic flak trap. Many hit Apaches barely made it back. They didn't complete their mission.

3 Chinocks were launched with sling loads of Apache parts for the base. They took fire and had to drop their loads.

Longbows are good for hunting armor. In this situation they couldn't target anything until it opened up. Apache planners are regrouping.

Murphy's law hit big.

Apparently there were two attempts to rescue these crewman, and they E&E'd for some time before capture.

Apache attacks have continued.

Onward to Baghdad!!!

They're probably taking the same burned-out hulk and driving it around the countryside, dumping it in different areas so they'll have different backgrounds to claim even more were shot down.

I guess I should have added that the Apache on that clip I just saw was a Long Bow and fully intact. It was not burned I wished I could have recorded it and showed you all. It was on a flat bed truck driving through some town.
