Ok I think I asked a question about something on Vista before but , I'll ask it again

1. Does the Vista Platform read disk made with XP?
2. If you get a new Laptop with Vista can you transfer you Data from XP to it?

3. Ok this is probably stupid but here goes, What is the differance between a
Satellite note book and a regular LAN card?

What I guess I'm getting at is I have Satellite ISP will I beable to access it anywhere with the Satellite note book (with a card or whatever) or will I still have to be in a WI FI area?

I don't know CRAP about Puters but I need 1 I can use anywhere , hopefully using the Service I have now with Hughes OR Wild Blue.

Thanks

Goose

Goose, I'll type up a full reply but here's a quicky for now:

1. & 2. Yes. I've sent files and have made CD's of pictures on my wifes laptop (Vista) and sent them to/used them on XP machines.

3. Satellite is just the model name (like Mustang is to Ford). A LAN card can be either internal (also called a NIC [Network Interface Card]) or external (where you slide it into the laptop). The externals aren't too popular now. Both of those you have to plug a cable into. If you are talking about a Wireless Card, that's a whole different animal. I

f you mean wireless: You will need to be near a Wi-Fi gateway (Home wireless router or similar) or in a Wi-Fi HotSpot. Your ISP shouldn't matter when it comes to connectivity. You either plug it in or flip a switch and you're on.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Bro,

I know I should know the answers, but Hey I just play with mine mostly and STILL CAN'T TYPE

I need to get \"Mobile\" so I can carry my records with me , I have my
\"PNY sticks\" filled so I won't have to leave them on the drive but If I need to access them I'll have them available instead of carrying 3 portfolios :(

Plus the Hospitals around here are all now \"HOT-SPOTS\" so I'll have something to do instead of watching TV in bed.

When you get time just email it to me

Thanks Goose

I have read of stability problems with Vista on a few other forums. Apparently in some pre-packaged laptops and such that come with 512MB RAM, it isn't enough. !GB is a minimum and the more you have the better. DO NOT believe what anyone trying to sell a Vista machine says. The forums are full of USERS and the anecdotal evidence speaks for itself. 1GB minimum or stability problems with this OS will visit you soon or later.

I was told the Vista EULA basically gives MS rights to all materials on your HDD.

If thats the Case Snipe , I can \"Live without Vista\" I'll just get another XP2 and loaded it up into a Lap Top.
I'm not changing my PC to Vista even though I have the RAM more than enough (2G)
I'll look in the \"Puter shops\" for a P4 with dual core cap.
I just think it will be for me \"More of a problem with my \"PUTER SKILLS\"

But I still like to have the info on the 2 because the Girls have new \"Toshiba\"Satellite notebooks with VISTA.

I have had many 'computer people' tell me not just to stay away from vista, but to \"Stay the hell away from vista\".

Ditto
but the EULA stuff is nonsense, MS dosent own the HD and they have no right to anything on it except ( perhaps ) Vista itself. I for one still hate XP and would rather have ME back.

I saw a book at teh bookstore the other day titled \"hacking Windows Vista\" or something along those lines. Talked about how to dig into the back and set everything up right.

This reminds me, I need to get my Linux conversion back on track.

Sorry Goose. That was my reply. I forgot to edit out the beginning.

Uhmm, Booms, ME was a huge flop!

Vista isn't that bad. I'd give it a few Service Packs for it to get the bugs out (which they should've done before roll-out!!).

ME was a huge flop because it had some problems and it wasnt a HUGE upgrade from 98SE. I was one of the FEW people that had very very few problems with it, XP Pro has been far more troublesome for me than ME was. Wheather that is directly due to XP or the fact that it's on a Gateway I have no idea.

ME was my first experience with computers of my own, I had a little time with
98 But I really liked ME, I never really had any problems most of the problems was myself or equipment failure.
XP I have seen it have some problems with stability but that far and few between,
I just can't really see getting a new OS until the bugs are worked out.

But I wouldn't say \"ME\" was a flop either I guess its just personal choice.
