Here's a surprise, at least it seems that way to some people. The article widely quotes an Army Times piece from last June. I've only posted the relevant parts but overall, the cost is up 8.1 Billion (from 24.2 to 32.3 Billion) and rising. Keep in mind the total savings over a 20 year period was going to be 50 Billion.

Quote:
Increasing costs at other BRAC sites
The Fort Monmouth, N.J., closing is not the only 2005 decision by the Base Realignment and Closure commission that has experienced a cost increase in the last two years.

A random sampling of the 2008 federal budget requests submitted by the various military branches for 13 other BRAC decisions shows a more than $1.8 billion increase in the one-time cost estimates of closing or realigning installations.

Those increases range from $16 million in the cost to realign March Air Reserve Base, Calif., to a $776 million hike in the cost of realigning Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort McCoy, Wis.

From least to most expensive, the cost increases are:

• $16 million to realign March Air Reserve Base from $5.2 million to $21.1 million.

• $18 million to close Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Ga., from $23.8 million to $41.9 million.

• $21 million to realign Bradley International Airport Air Guard Station, Conn.; Barnes Air Guard Station, Mass.; Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich.; Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., and Martin State Air Guard Base, Md., from $14.3 million to $35.4 million.

• $24 million to realign Naval Station Newport, R.I., from $11.8 million to $35.5 million.

• $31 million to close Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Calif., from $14 million to $45 million.

• $40.4 million to realign Otis Air National Guard Base, Mass.; Lambert-St. Louis International Airport Air Guard Station, Mo., and Atlantic City Air Guard Station, N.J., from $53.7 million to $94.1 million.

• $40.3 million to realign Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., from $104.2 million to $144.5 million.

• $53 million to close Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine, from $193.1 million to $246 million.

• $93.6 million to close Fort Gillem, Ga., from $56.8 million to $150.4 million.

• $186 million to realign Fort Hood, Texas, from $436 million to $621.7 million.

• $208.6 million to close Fort Monroe, Va., from $72.4 million to $281 million.

• $267 million to close Brooks City Base, Texas, from $325.3 million to $592.3 million.

• $726.9 million to realign Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort McCoy, Wis., from $773.1 million to $1.5 billion.

A billion here, a billion there.... Eventually that adds up to some real money. [tard]
IDK about anyone else, but I'm not even a little bit surprised.

BRAC SUCKS PERIOD!
Drawing down the military was a MISTAKE, started in 1991.
And been a TOTAL FAILURE SINCE.

Now I could understand Myrtle Beach, the city WANTED IT CLOSED DOWN, due to the PRE-MO Beach front and land prices and a few other areas who wanted the Military to \"GO\" but most wanted them to Stay.

So cut the Active forces basically in HALF and having the Reserves and National Guard do the other half.

Gee wasn't that one of \"Dumbfields Ideas\"? Well that and TQM.

So now we might as well just say \"Your all Active Duty, just on a Seasonal Bases like \"Fruit Pickers\" we'll call you and you JUMP.

Actually it started pre 1991 with the Grahm-Rudman Act (sp?). Couldn't get Active Duty a 2.2% pay raise but in an 11th hour session Congress voted themselves a 4.7% pay increase. There shouldn't even exist the term \"career poitician\" in the American vernacular.

I remember them days \"Well\" [bs] ,

Not getting a raise actually for several years during the 80's but Congress giving them selfs plenty of them.

But the actual \"Smaller, leaner, 50%/50% idea for the services was a
\"Cheney & Rumsfield idea.
I know the \"Clinton's\" get blamed for it, but it was those 2 with \"Wolfilitz\" the 3 Jokers WHO were running this war at the start. They all served in the \"Old Man Bushes Admin. They figured didn't need a \"Big standing army and The \"Computer Age Military\" will rule.

But you have to really place the blame starting in 1989 to the Present for the military's problems.

It just snowballed

Damn sorry guys I dint realize we wasted so much money on our \"active duty\" mandated consolidated tool room here at Barnes. Not to mention all those nifty renovations for the people up in personel.

I don't know how the Reserves look at these \"BRAC\" ALIGNMENTS or what their \"Mandated to do\" but theres alot of Bases now that were\"AX'ed\" based on \"Political Reasons\" and this last round To me really Shows that reasoning .

You DON'T just MY opinion here, during a WAR take apart \"Combat seasoned\" squadrons and wings and disbanded them for a Stupid thing like \"BRAC\" and spend this \"$$$$$$$$$$$$$\" TEARING down just to have to rebuild and Modify another place when the \"$$$$$$$$$$$\" is needed for the equipment for the Fighting.

I'll take the Heat, but atleast they waited until we got Home before they \"STUCK IT UP Our ASS\" breaking us up along with the Beach and the UK units.
