Powell cites report that Iraq plans chemical attack

WASHINGTON, March 24 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Monday the United States had heard reports that the Iraqi authorities planned to use chemical weapons against Iraqis in the south and blame it on the United States.

"There are such reports. I have no doubt that he (Iraqi President Saddam Hussein) would do such a thing if he thought it served his interest," Powell told the Fox News network in an interview.

"We are concerned about it. We will follow this matter carefully. We will also get everything we can together -- all the intelligence that we can," he added.

A senior State Department official who asked not to be named said the report was that Ali Hassan al-Majid, Saddam's cousin and the commander in the south, had authority to use chemical weapons against the local Shi'a Muslim population. He declined to say where the information came from.

Majid, known in the West as Chemical Ali, has been blamed for the chemical attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988, which killed about 5,000 people.

The United States and Britain invaded Iraq last week to overthrow Saddam Hussein and get rid of any weapons of mass destruction Iraq might have.

The State Department official repeated a report, first circulated at the Pentagon early this month, that the Iraqis were trying to acquire uniforms similar to those worn by U.S. and British forces "in order to carry out massacres, which would then be blamed on coalition forces." He gave no details of the source or credibility of the alleged report.

It's not as bad as you think MsM&M, these chemical weapons have been made into some kind of boogey man.

They aren't particularly useful weapons, and they are liable to cause far more harm to the Iraqi soldiers and civilians than our troops.

But thanx for the heads up.

Whatever the case, they are best kept unused for all concerned.

US troops will be in a particularly evil mood if biochem weapons are used.

Onward to Baghdad!!!

LOL poor "blinky" LOL
I dont want to Nuke 'em cause I dont want to be glowing in the dark while I'm baiting the hook while sitting in my Barc-O-Lounger on the back of my Boston Whaler trolling the Tigres and snarfing pizza. We should have plenty of ways of frying them without Nukes.

No shit...............

This war has me concerned for a number of reasons, one of them is what we will uncover about some of our "friends and allies"

There is always somebody tougher, and this President it servig a higher calling, and will use anything in his disposal to make certain that this great country and her freedom does not fade away. I have no malice towards any innocent people caught up in this war, but if they want to use chemical weapons, we reserve the right to take this to another level. People seem to forget that its not the United States that is targeting civilians, its reckless regimes hazarding them. This is going to sound horriable, but in the end are the Iraqi people any different than the Germans, and Japanese of WWII? Not all Japanese in Hiroshima were Shinto Idealistic extremists...........Nor where all Germans in Dresden, Nazi thugs, their governing leadership put them in harms way, and they are the ones who should be blamed............If this must go Nuclear to save the lives of the rightious.......Than so be it, I would be all for it.

Btw............I didn't see the U.N. rap Vladimer Putin's knuckles when he went buck wild on his crack down in Chechneya.

If your not having fun, your not doing it right!

I did read about a lot of Palaces and Resort type buildings in the Iraqi countryside. Think we could drop a Tactical on one of those, or maybe those extremists in Northern Iraq as a warmup in chems start getting used? Those extremists, or nuke one of Fayadeen Saddam's hiding places.

I don't theak we should do anything but intensify the bombing if biochems are used, because unless they are used in massive quantities they are not likely to be very effective.

Of course if casualties were very high, the gloves would be off.

Onward to Baghdad!!!
